John Salmons

Post#1 » by Bizz » Thu Jan 8, 2009 3:14 pm

Although I like how this team is playing lately the Cavs game showed that we are still far away from a contender. Therfore some moves have to be made. And as the most of the board I have faith in LB to compile right players that are needed to win. DJ and the Jrich trade give me enough confidence in Larry to give him more room to operate and get the players he likes.

Here is where Salmons steps in he is currently unhappy with the choaching staff and is on the block. He is a versatile player who can play PG/SG/SF. If you need to know more you can go to http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/John-Salmons-4214/ To lazy to recap :P All in all he seems like the perfect Larry Brown player and a great compliment to what we allready have on the wings.

Sacramento is willing to trade him and their biggest position of need is PG. So a trade of Salmons for Felton and S.Brown works in the trade checker. IMO it is good for both teams for SAC: They get rid of a unhappy player who doesn't really fit in their longterm plan and is taking away minutes from Martin and Garcia. While they get back a PG that they really need(Udrih and Brown just won't cut it). Plus both incoming players are FAs in the summer therfore they get some cap flexibility. There is only Rubio available in the draft and from what I hera and read he won't come out this year. Felton is one of the best available FAs at PG and if they have his rights they could get him far cheaper than on the open market.

For Bobcats it's quite easy if you ask me. Felton is a RFA this summer and with DJ there is very little chance we retain his services. Therfore we should trade him for a player who is more in our longterm plans. There is not a lot of teams looking for a PG so SAC makes a good trading partner. Some of you will say that leaving DJ alone at PG is not good that is why there can be a follow up trade like May+Morrison for Watson. I think salmons gives us insurance for Bell who is aging and more D. The lineup after both trades would look like:

DJ/Watson/Singeltery
Bell/Carrol
Wallace/Salmons
Diaw/Howard/Ajnica
Okafor/Hollins/Muhammed

Since I have little faith that we will make the playoffs this year(due to large no. of away games left) We can get someone like Curry in the late lottery to give us some ofense. Thoughts...

I don't see why we take Curry because he is gonna be a pg in the nba not a 2.
If this trade happens that would be completely awesome. Salmons would be an awesome 2guard for us. We would have a legit scorer and he would be our aggressive goto guy who can create his own shot. Also I am not worried about leaving DJ because Sean is a decent backup that could totally give 15 minutes a game as a backup. We would be able to trade Bell at the deadline if we had Salmons and we would be solid at every position. I would welcome and love this trade.
I think they would ask a little more then just Felton though.
They would probably try and make it Miller and Mek in the trade and the only way that would fly is if they threw in Thompson and a unprotected pick and they wouldn't do that.

If it went threw I would really believe in the FO because that would mean they have made a great draft choice plus 2 excellent trades that worked out for both teams which might even make teams want to trade with us more.
Plus we would be making another trade that helps keep Wallace here.

If we pulled off that trade, MJ might be up for Executive of the Year. I cannot see Felton and Brown bringing Salmons, but if the Kings did it, I'd love it. But he would start over Bell, not be behind Crash.

Yes he would be the starter. Even Brown couldn't bench him for Bell. He is a 20 point scorer. Maybe not on a really good team but on the Kings and the Cats 20 a game no prob.

Salmons has been my desired target for several weeks now. Felton has performed well enough that he should have better value to a team like Sacramento. But, I think they would want to include another player to dump some salary. I do NOT want Udrih under ANY circumstances...his salary situation is worse than anyone on our roster. I might take a Douby brother with Salmons for Felton and May. That gives us 2 reserve 1's to compete for the extra time behind DJ. Douby's deal is only guaranteed through next season.

Salmons is a good but not great player that would be very good in LB's system. I think he fits this team well, and provides a quality SG that can be a go-to scorer when needed. Bell of the bench would be awesome.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I'm still a Felton fan but it seems obvious DJ is the PG of the future and Felts is of course a FA this summer. Yeah, I think this is probably a decent move for the Cats. Salmons would definitely start at SG. Bell would be a great 6th man or maybe a nice trade chip.

my guess is the kings would ask us to take back a bad contract in the deal.

and salmons would start over bell.

I was going to say the same thing about the Bobcats if the Kings wanted Felton from us lol. I thought that the rumors were that we'd only trade Felton if the other team took on one of our bad contacts (Carroll or Mohammed).

Well when I started playing GM to get Salmons I came up with that trade Salmons+ Kenny Thomas for Felton+ Morisson+May+SBrown. But this may be a bit of one sided for sacramento and would left us with 2 rookie PGs and no trade assets. But in the long run I would still do it.

But I think that Salmons is not a go to guy on any team. He is a role player although a really good one. His highest ppg happened last year at 12, he is currentlly scoring 18 but that is more of the testement how bad Sac really is.

I should make myself clear. I didn't mean he is a natural goto guy or a legit #1. He is a #3 but he would be our go to guy. Only DJ can create but he can. If Wallace is including it's not worth it unless they throw in Brad Miller. I would take back a bad contract in a heartbeat for him or maybe throw in Lex? He might have value being a young Center.

See this is why my thread of if you were the gm/coach what would you do because we can add all this stuff. It's the same thing and the nbalive jokes are stupid because we always specualate. Why not make it fun and organized.

Any deal involving Salmons will more than likely include Kenny Thomas, which actually has a worse contract than Mohammed does.

Only per year. Overall he actually has about 2 million less on his contract...17.2 vs 19.4 give or take. He also exires a year earlier (Nazr has a player option which there's no doubt he'll take) and it's before the all important '10 season.

That's why I'm kind of doubting the rumor that he's the "cost" for getting Salmons.

It's completely worth taking on a little money to get Salmons. We have one of the lowest payrolls right now and we deseperately need players so if we have to take on Kenny Thomas to get an 18 point a game scorer it's well worth it. Production wise he makes up for JRich almost and puts DJ in the starting role.

Think about it this way what is better

Felton
Bell
Crash
Mek
Diaw

or

DJ
Salmons
Wallace
Diaw
Mek

The second starting lineup looks like a true legit playoff team and nobody is a 24 point a game scorer there all guys willing to give up the ball which LB will thrive on and have them possibly overachiveing. They could be 6th seed.

Has cap room helped us in the past??? With our fantastic free agent pick ups?

If an upgrade is going to cost taking on the cost of an ordinary contract, I say do it.

I too like Salmons and think he will fit well.

Lack of cap space limits your ability to have flexibility in your future trades. It's not just a landing spot for a big time free agent (which I agree we can't hope to get for a number of years). I mean, getting Juwan Howard actually surprised me, even though he's old and was generally unwanted in the league. Players would say "why go there...does he need the money that bad?"

Salmons would be a nice fit and I hope we can work out a deal for him. But we'd need to rid ourselves of some bad contracts to take on Kenny Thomas.

It's a challenge to make trades that don't just bring you mediocre talent to replace other average talent. Salmons is good but not great, and he's certainly not a star. He's a step up from Bell, but where would he fall in the all-star balloting for 2 guards in the east? Pretty far down the list.

So all I'm saying is, YES, I'd LOVE to get Salmons but he's not such an answer that we take on bad players and contracts in the deal without giving up some of our own (NO MORE NAZI DEALS!).
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

But the point is we are already overthe cap. We are a team that can't afford to say no to a deal because we would have to take back a bad contract. We are also a team that desperately needs a scorer so even though Salmons isn't a premier allstar he would do wonders for us.
That Jason Richardson situation wasn't different because we were expansion and weren't even aloud to go over the cap in the begining so of course we recently had cap room.

Taking back Kenny Thomas's contract is well worth Salmons. Espially since Salmons contract is about half of what it easily could be.

Taking back Kenny Thomas' contract is not worth Salmons. Salmons, up till this season has been a mediocre player, and now since hes playing on a very pathetic, and dismal team hes averaging arond 18 ppg. If Jason Richardson wasnt the go to scorer that we needed what makes anyone think Salmons can be a go to scorer? As of right now I think Bell is a better overall player than Salmons.

Salmons also has a rotten attitude.

I would trade for him, but only if WE were the ones giving up some bad contracts, and not Sacramento. We have enough bad contracts in Mohammed, Carroll, and even Gerald Wallaces contract isnt exactly friendly, so why add another one in Kenny Thomas? Thomas scored his first basket in over a year the other night, and thats pathetic for a guy on his salary. We already have 10-11 million in salary tied up between Mohammed, and Carroll who average around 12-13 minutes a game combined.

Trade for him, but dont get that horrific contract back. I dont care if it expires in 2010 or not.
