ESPN: Bobcats, Mavs agree to trade

Post#1 » by countryboi » Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:11 pm

ESPN is reporting the Charlotte Bobcats and Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a trade in principal, but it doesn't involve Raymond Felton.

According to the report, the Bobcats send Matt Carroll and Ryan Hollins to Dallas for 7-foot center DeSagana Diop.

Diop is averaging 1.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 13.3 minutes per game this season as backup center.

Last week, a three-way deal between the Bobcats, Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder, involving Felton, apparently broke down.

I think the bobcats made off like fat rats...carroll was not going to play anyway...now the bobcats can go in many different directions with the frontcourt...can go small with diaw and meka or big with meka and diop....and we didnt give up anything of value

That Diop contract is bad but at least the Cats didn't give up a good player like Felton.

Carroll's contract is a year shorter and front loaded so the Mavs should save $ esp if they want to be active in the 2010 FA.

Also intersting is the age of the players...

Wallace, Diaw, Okafur, Diop are all 26 years old...all coming to their best years

My thoughts exactly. I'm pretty sure Wallace isn't going anywhere now, but who knows. There certainly isn't a SG available (that we know of) that will match-up for a 1-1 trade that's worth it for us.

As for the trade, I like it. Hollins may be missed but we have a big WITH SIZE now, not a few PF/C tweeners that are really PF's (which Hollins is).

MUCH better than that bogus Felts to Dallas deal kicking around, but man, Diop is getting paid very well for a back up who will only get spot mins.................................unless there is something else in the works.

P.S. My condolences to Fats missus!!

I think it's a good trade for the Bobcats. Apperently Larry wants him as we tried to simg him in the offseason and also the roumored felton trade. We basically trade one untreadable contract for another. Sure Diop is owed 10 mill more overall but I can live with that. Caroll wasn't in our longterm plans but his contract was. I think trading him for a player who Larry Brown wants is great. Hollins showed some improvement but he is only 2 years younger than Diop and didn't show much until now. At least Diop showed in the past that he could be an important piece on contender. I expect him to play better under Larry and will post better numbers than so far.

Also his confidence should rise knowing he is welcomed here. He could be another piece for us. We will quicklly become known as a good defensive squad as Larry has transformed our rooster by bringing in 3 great defenders in Diaw, Bell and diop. And lets not forget the old saying don't trade big for small.

With one huge difference.

In the last year of Hammers contract he'll be paid around $3.5 million
In the last year of Diops contract he'll be paid around $7.5 million

I am thinking both of our teams will be very underwhelmed about the deal. As a Mav fan Carroll does nothing for me, but Hollins is an athletic 7 footer who has the same size and weight as Tyson Chandler. Did he ever get a shot with the Bobcats, or am I just beeing the overly optomistic Mav fan?

As for Diop, he is just horrible with the ball. As soft as you can possibly imagine on the offensive end, but was a very important piece in our finals run. We do not get by the Spurs in the 06 playoffs without him. I do not know why, but it seemed like he regressed after getting that second contract. I am thinking you can say the same with Carroll. Both of them had to have accomplished something to get those contracts.

hollins has the basketball IQ of a rock...he can jump but its not a very good rebounder and follows up good plays with really really bad ones...he maybe decent one day but i dont think he will every live up to that tyson chandler mold that everyone seems to like to place him in...then again he has never played with a point guard as good as kidd before

Hollins will try and dunk everything he catches - no matter if he is under the rim or 25 feet away from the rim. Problem is the whole "catches" part.

He is super athletic and energtic, but he just isn't that smart and has no offensive game at all outside of dunks.

He'll also try and block everything and picks up a foul about every nano second.

He got a shot - in fact, he was starting there for us for a while - but he's just not starting material.

Pity, because he is very likeable.

Something to note: Hollins was a BYC player, so he would have had to agree to the trade in order for it to go through.

Good of him not to nix the deal IMO.

this looks like a good deal for us. Free roster spot, will we sign anyone else?

I like the trade, gives us another solid and young big to help okafor and diaw down low, maybe now we dont have to trade felton and see what dis roster can do.

My initial reaction is positive. I did not think Carroll and his Contract were of any benefit to us, and Hollins was very limited. Diop's defense is very helpful, and obviously Diop was on LB's radar. he was right w/ the J-Rich trade and who he brought in, and I trust him with this move. Go Cats!

You all will like Diop. He just doesn't fit Carlisle's system. Diop was a good player and very important piece of the Mavs under Avery Johnson.

I like this trade. Our defense at the rim is now very very good. When both Diop and Okafor on the floor, if Okafor doesn't put your shot into the 3rd row, then Diop will. Okafor coming across as a weakside defender is going to be nasty.
