Playoffs...the Positive Side...

Post#1 » by aceunc111 » Wed Feb 25, 2009 8:19 pm

So I have a friend who works for the Bobcats and she called me yesterday asking me for some help. He question to me..."HOW and WHY SHOULD we make the playoffs"...I was to find ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I could trying to take a positive outlook on why we would make the playoffs.

Now, I will preface this with..I think it's going to be EXTREMELY difficult to make the playoffs..but here's what I came up with ...just thought I'd share..feel free to discuss and bash the ideas :) I went from both Statistical aspects and also non-statistical aspects.

1st the non-statistical aspects...(ANYONE can argue against these points too..but I'm trying to remain positive)

1) Everyone is finally "healthy" and maybe we can start playing as a team without having people out of position.
2) We actually have playoff experience on our team because of the trades. Diaw, Bell, Diop, Radman, Howard (correct me if I'm wrong on him), Nazi, all have pretty extensive playoff experience.
3) The trade deadline is OVER..now, that doesn't mean a trade can't be worked out..but it's a lot more difficult. Guys rumored to be in deals ..mostly Felton and Wallace can relax and focus on OUR team and not..where they might end up by the trade deadline.
4) just more time for Larry to get these guys to focus on the Defensive end and more time to learn the offense.

Now, the statistics that you cant really argue with...
1) 68% of the 25 games (17 out of 25) remaining are against teams with an under .500 record!!
2) Our schedule up to this point has been the 4th most difficult schedule in the NBA with opponents winning % at a .525 mark (yes, I did the math myself..I was very bored at home last night waiting for the game)
3) Our REAMINING schedule is the 3rd most EASIEST schedule in the NBA with remaining opponents winning % at a .451 mark.
4) I don't have my cheat sheet here in front of me..so I'm shooting off the top of my head..out of the 7 teams ahead of us (for the 6th spot) most of them have the hardest part of their schedule remaining (I do have stats for this..but can't remember them and I don't have the sheet in front of me...I"m sorry)...

Anyways, so yeah, that's what I did to help my friend out and try to make myself believe we have a shot at the playoffs..GOTTA WIN THE NEXT 4 GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is my non-statistical aspect:

Question: "HOW and WHY SHOULD we make the playoffs"

How = because all of the other teams we are fighting for a playoff spot all of a sudden suck worse than we do?

Why should we = Until we start playing better and as a team, we shouldn't.

(sorry, tired, grumpy and annoyed at our play over the past week)

Rebuilding franchises believe that making the playoffs as the eighth seed is better than getting a higher draft pick. That being said, the Bobcats are in a unique situation because they are not REbuilding, per se.

Still, with a young core and upside, it's better to get some experience and hunger and incentive to become better than to have everyone sitting around with a bad feeling in their stomachs while drafting a hotshot. The current players will ALWAYS think that their current unit is good enough, given a year or two to improve, and the players seem to have good chemistry.
