Re: Summer Fun Draft - Voting needed

Post#2 » by fatlever » Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:39 pm

i will be happy to get things started...

man, this is tough... all these teams are nasty.

nugentrk - i love the 1-2 punch of west and bosh up front, but i wonder if they are tough enough to grind out a long physical series. But my main beef is your backcourt. I just dont think tj ford and kevin martin would be able to get stops when it counted.

slam - i think this team is still a year away from being able to contend. durant and harden just dont have the playoff experience needed, yet, to win a ring. kidd, odom and chandler would help make up for their inexperience but i dont think it would be enough.

countryboi - defensively i think your wings would kill you in a 7 game series and would ultimately be your downfall.

JD3 - maybe the most solid starting 5 in the bunch, solid from top to bottom. a team that would be in the mix to the end. however, i think the lack of a true established go to guy would be the killer. who gets the ball at the end of games? shaq? lewis? granger? mayo? all are great #2 options but can any of them be a number #1 in 2010?

Olajuwon34 - i dont see how arenas and gordon can co-exist in the same backcourt. too many shots, not enough passing or defense. and to make it worse, the frontcourt lacks experience on the defensive end.

waydownsouth - man i love tony parker. i think he has taken his game to another level, but i just wonder, can he carry a team offensively when he doesnt have the defense worrying about duncan down low. who can score in the post when needed?

E4 - man i love this team. if i was picking a team to root for, this would be it. a team built to run. but, until a team actually proves they can win like this, i have to go with the other more proven options.

paydro - ginobili and gasol, not quite kobe and gasol. i love manu. he is a difference maker, but i just do see him being able to carry this team offensive as the man option on the wings. gasol would surely help down low, but maybe not enough.

my top 3

3rd Place - Doc - 3 years ago, when dirk was mvp and brand wasnt broken i would give the nod to this team. they have a true go-to superstar in dirk and brand when healthy is a monster on the boards and down low. joe johnson provides the scoring from the wing and crash is playing garbage man. bell and childress provide defense off the bench. my one beef is calderon who i think would get roasted in the finals on defense. this team really needs a defensive stopper at pg behind jose.

2d place - Amcoolio - best backcourt in the draft. those two together would be a nightmare. i dont really care for peja on the wing, but luckily you have batum to come in and play defense when needed. and aldridge and bynum still leaves me thinking, who is gonna get tough (w/out fouling out)? the difference for me, is bogut. he'd be my starter over bynum, but even off the bench, he would be there to help defensively and on the boards. birdman doing his thing only makes it better.

1st place - Legion of Doom - defensively this team would be a nightmare, an absolute nightmare. off the court, this team would be a nightmare. in the locker room this team would be a nightmare. but if those knuckleheads could actually stay out of trouble and not kill each other, wow, watch out. nash leading the show, iggy and AI scoring from the wing. boozer down low and artest and sheed locking dudes down on defense. Just too much all around talent to keep down.

I'm guessing non participants can vote as well??

If so my votes are:

1st place - Amcoolio - as Fats says the only chink is Peja, but having Batum there helps and if Rubio could have a decent year, you could play with the 3 guards together for stretches.

2nd place - Doc - Normally I'd say having Dirk at C is just a disaster but Brand is the perfect man next to him as he can help out on the boards and even defend the C on occasion. Having the big Pryz coming off the bench is the perfect insurance in case you require a true defensive C. If the Pg's were getting badly burnt I would bring in Bell to defend and have Johnson take over the ball carrying duties.

3rd place - Country Boi - I just like that mix of players.

This is seriously tough and I found myself changing my decision several times.

I'm assuming that both Chabber and I can vote (which hurts our chances, but it's all good) and that I'm not speaking for both of us here.

3rd-Str8 Up Derogatory- I'm an appreciator of Andre Miller's and Melo + Pierce. Lack of interior defense will limit success.

2nd-Amcoolio- I love the pairing of Billups and Roy. I agree with Fats, Bogut should be the starter. I don't have faith in your wings.

1st-Paydro- Manu/Rondo and Gasol/Nene are great pairings. Your sfs are weak offensively, but will get it done on the opposite end. I like Billups/Roy WAY better than Rajon/Manu, but I think better wings and Nene/Gasol work better than Aldridge/Bynum. VERY close call though. In the end, Phil Jackson helps a lot.

1st place: LOD
Just a great mix of talent and players ready to make it happen today.

2nd place: Doc
I think the players you have compliment each other well and your team is deep.

3rd place: Fats
Your D would suck, but you have enough horses to pull it off.

Nugentrk: The first thing that jumps out looking at this roster is that there is no banging center. If it plays a team with a tough low-block scorer, Bosh is forced to PF, in order to slot in... Okur? Outside Mbah a Moute there's not much defense on this squad, especially with Fragile Ford running the show. On the upside, this team will be putting up 100+ no problem, and Popovich is guaranteed to get the most out of the role players he can.

LOD: What can I say, this is a pretty badass crew. The PG spot is made up of two tall white guys who could definitely have trouble guarding the Tony Parkers (or TJ Fords) of the world, but you always have a shooter at that spot and Nash is of course an offensive machine. The pick and pop with Boozer/Scola will be killer as well. I think the real key to analyzing this team comes down to Sheed... to me, Noah is as good as him at this point, and while they're both OK, they're not up to snuff with the rest of the squad. Still, a well-balanced squad that can do a bit of everything.

STR8 UP Derogatory: I'm not sure what to make of that frontcourt. Diaw and Varejao will combine for 10ppg, while off the bench we have Il Mago and a rookie, albeit a very talented one. Obviously the offense is going to have to come from Melo and Pierce, but Miller seems like a strange fit since he can't shoot and won't be handling the ball much. A lot of questionmarks here, but if this was a real squad I would definitely be intrigued to see how this talent meshes.

Slam: This is a good team. It will be an incredible ball-handling group outside of the centers, and their role will exclusively be blocking shots and playing defense, which is OK given the firepower from the rest of the crew. I do question whether Odom as the only post scorer could cause this team to get bogged down at times in the halfcourt, but I don't have much else to criticize.

E4nf6: Well, he certainly has a philosophy. There's a lot of speed on the court, and not a lot of power. Mismatches can be fun, but they always cut both ways, and if a team dedicates itself to getting back on defense and has some athletes (i.e., it doesn't end up like the Mavs vs. the Warriors), I wonder what this offense looks like at that point.

Coolio: Probably the right move here is to just bench Peja and play Batum the whole time as a defensive stopper (he guards the tougher wing player to help Roy out). As it is, you have that big hole and you wonder what happens when the squad plays an all-out athlete team like e4. Still, I can't deny it, this is the most talented team assembled from top to bottom, so long as the starters play 40 minutes (except the frontcourt, Bogut/Andersen are fine).

doc.end: Nowitzki at center is a very risky move, one that could pay dividends, or end up with a lot of cheap fouls on the #1 overall pick. I am just not that excited about Elton Brand anymore, and Calderon takes as much as he gives. Johnson-Wallace is a nice wing duo, but I wonder how the ball movement works on this team. Calderon gives to Dirk, who shoots or passes out to the 3pt line? Weirdly enough, Gerald Wallace might be an important player on offense because of his ability to slash.

Countryboi: I just see this squad getting destroyed on defense. Even the backups, Robinson, Evans, Brad Miller, just don't inspire any confidence that this team can get stops. Granted, it should also be an extremely difficult team to stop, but I'm not sure the Rose-Amare P&R is ideal given Rose's shooting ability (or lack thereof) and Al Horford isn't going to be dropping 20 very often.

JDM3: Another very questionable defensive squad in my mind. I would probably start Pietrus just to get a stopper out there, there aren't enough basketballs to keep that current 5 happy. It's a very talented squad though and should be freaking unbelievable on offense. I see why others like it.

Olajuwon: This team is resting a LOT on Brook Lopez's ability to play defense, and Gilbert Arenas making a full recovery. If those two things work out, this is a contender for sure. The wings do have some defensive issues though... is the plan against an elite SG to play Dahntay Jones extended minutes? Or just to shoot it out? Because that's reaaaaaally not something I'm comfortable with.

Waydownsouth: I can't lie, I like the collection of talent. The defense should be disgusting inside and out, and there's an excellent bench. The question is, how many midrange jumpers can this team take? That's basically all 3 backcourt players' MO, plus Courtney Lee. This isn't a great 3-shooting team, and when you're expecting 3/4 of your offense to come from the backcourt, that can be a pretty major problem.

BTW, my coach is Larry Brown, who would probably start Batum instead.

Anyway, here are my team by team votes.

Nugentrk

Not very high on this one. The defense is poor, and starting Pops at SF, in a league loaded with talent (10 teams), is a definite weakness. There is plenty of scoring to go around though, and the backups are capable of lighting it up as well. But this team is like the Toronto Raptors..a middle of the pack team in the East.

LOD

Aside from the SF position, I think you got it on lockdown - I think Haywood should start (very underrated) with Rasheed and have Boozer come off the bench, but then you have Scola back there as well. Nash fits in well with this team as well. Very solid team, but scary risks if Nash and/or Igu goes out. Would you play Iverson 48 minutes? I guess the same could be said about my team as well.

STR8

The wing combo is solid, with two all star players. However, Miller is at the very back end of his career, and aside from Battier and Griffin (who i'd start) the reserves aren't that strong. I'd also activate Landry over Korver and Weaver over JCN. Not a fan of the C rotation.

Slam

This is easily so much better than the other teams because Durant is a superstar, and probably with Roy the players in the immediate second tier after Lebron, Kobe etc. However, a lot is banking on Harden playing 40 minutes because the depth to this team is poor. Especially the razor thin frontcourt, with only one solid PF (Durant would have to play PF if Odom is off the floor). Still, Durant should make his teammates better.

E4

So much is banking on Anthony Randolph exploding...you are playing many players out of position here. It just seems like a solid, but not spectacular, team - the great PG play helps a lot though. But I am really not scared of that frontcourt, I know I'd be licking my chops with Bynum/Aldridge/Bogut going up against that team. Especially with the coach.

Doc

Another solid team with a solid coach - I just really hate Calderon and I'd start the bigger Sessions over him. Two great players in Dirk and Nowitzski - enough said. The depth is questionable, this team should be so much better with Wallace on the floor than Childress, and we all know Wallace's history with injuries, but overall, a great draft. I guess getting the first pick helps though

Paydro

Solid team, I just don't think the defense is there on the wings (unless Rondo plays 48 minutes) and too much of the scoring load lies with Gasol and Ginobli. I like the depth on the bench though, and I'd actually activate the great Antoine and sit Walton's ass down. I am just not sure about Grant Hill, nor AK47 for that matter. Is there a way to play Jamison at SF? I also have a feeling Phil Jackson would hate coaching this team.

Countryboi

What can I say, this is a very young team with a few fossils that needs to develop a bit before I can make a judgment. Probably the exact opposite of a team Rick Adelman would like to coach. I am not sold about that SF rotation, I'd desperately try to force Oden in the starting lineup and move Horford down and possibly start Amare at SF. This is too quirky and too young of a team for me to rank in the top 3.

JDM3

I really don't like a lot of these players, so I'm trying not to be biased here. Aside from Granger, I'm not a big fan of the way this team would match up with the rest of the league. Lewis I think is overrated, and would get exposed playing with someone like Shaq and having to guard the other PF's in the league. The depth in the frontcourt is not very good, expecially when Shaq starts missing games. The SF slot is the only spot I feel comfortable with.

Olajuwon34

Again the defense with this team is not here, and the reserves are something you would see on a bad NBA team in a league with 30 teams, not one with 10. Aside from Milsap that second unit isn't scaring anyone, and the defense will get shredded with a Arenas/Gordon/Turk backcourt. If Lopez turns into a HOF, then this is a decent team, but again the reserves are so poor I couldn't consider this in the top 3.

Waydownsouth

This team is not going to score points. That frontcourt rotation is very sketchy, and I'd definitely activate David Anderson over those fools. This team just really doesn't scare me like the other teams. The starters are going to have to log a ****ton of minutes for this team to be sucessful.

Seriously you would promote David Anderson?
I'm baracking for him just because he's an Aussie, but I couldn't pick him over Camby, Kaman, Davis or Okafor.

Anderson is too soft, he is like a taller, whiter version of Al Harrington, but not as skillful.

I've decided to take what you get from which category and how you drafter into account not just the overall strenght of the team.

Nugentrk

Lack of PG depth (is Tinsley still considered to have positive value?) and quite a lack of proven pure center at bench but McGee and Hawes are serviceable. Interesting collection of PFs, it was close but sorry no vote from me.

LOD

Too many question marks. Not a NFL fan, some questionable picks (Daye ready for NBA, seriously?), and I think odds the club will pay someone on roster to not participate on practices by the end of year are really good. Clash of personalities waiting to happen. So from me it is an honourable mention, kind of 4th place.

STR8

Landry is a nice pick (activate him), Diaw is a nice pick. i would activate landry over korver and mybe Weaver over Navarro. DJ I think was a bit of a reach (at this point of his career). There is lack of Pg depth strenghten by question marks about how good Miller can be cause he won't getany younger. Also I think you don't have a good perimeter defense either. I thought i would bash you for Bargnani at C, but if paired with Griffin I think they are ok and you have kind of second frontcourt unit. I think I'll find a vote for you. I think it would be a tricky team for Steph to begin her NBA career with. (I don't take Coach Wade into consideration cause his cameo is like an extra pick but i think he could seriously brainwash some players and scare Anderson with his story about Amzonian canibals)

Slam

Kidd pick was great, Marc Gasol is great (I considered him until I decide to tak another route and went with Sessions as PG). I guess you wanted experince by picking Knight but I think there were better better 6-footers at that time (but thank you for not picking Lawson). This game is about winning next season so you took surprising strategy in relying on durant and Harden a lot. And you were close to be completely screwed in all-star category, and Mo Williams is not a bingo either. We'll see how Thunder will do next season. You have balanced team but probably not ready yet. Coach can help the players develop

E4

I like some of your picks valuewise for category and although the lack of backcourt depth, this is solid team.

Amcoolio

Larry Brown (not Byron Scott someone edit that in the first post) would like this team. You basically sacrifice overall depth and went for starting five and few 6th men and didn't care up to 12 players can be dressed. In this case in it worked. My only issue is backcourt depth, although Rubio is playing in NBA next year he is still a rookie. Normally I would say Roy can help at PG too but he has no serious backup at SG. So if either Roy of Billups would be injured you have problems and no backcourt bench. On closer look I see you have Batum so nevermind. You will get my vote.

Paydro

As I like the picks in scarce categories (Hill, Adrien, Chalmers, Lowry too) I like starting five less. Rondo is overhyped I think. I 've considered your team to vote mainly for depth of your team but you have soem injury prone players too so afterall I think it is a kicker.

Countryboi

I have a hard time to believe that team with Gallinari as a starting SF can win championship next year. Quality of players is there but this team is unbalanced both position wise and offense/defense wise.

JDM3

Collection of nice picks but I think this team is few years away to make some noise. Not yet but for the dpeth and the coach you are 3rd on my list.

Olajuwon34

I like value of Gordon as an Euro pick, Millsap for his category, Christmas as undrafted (although it was bit of a reach amd i think Finley was a nice find. Spanoulis, Lopez and Jefferson are solid. I'm not high on Arenas. That's pretty much all, I can't make myself to vote someone who was forced to pick Yao Ming for all-star category (and didn't evev do it as 16th pick), I think your team lacks depth, bigger guards, backcourt defense and I'm not fan of Turk being backed-up by Kapono, similar type of player, I would rather see athletic SF on roster to have a choice in case of bad matchup. And I'm sceptical Doc Rivers would help. Sorry, not top 3 from me.

Waydownsouth

I like Camby pick and Lee is good for his category too. Moon is solid pick and Brooks was a nice find. The big man rotation reminds me last year Clippers not really thing one would want in this game.
Uhm, experience is there, hustleness could be there, but I don't see it working. Not sure about offensive flow, not about this team being ultra-defensive enough nor deep enough to play hack-somebody strategy. Sorry, not top 3 from me.

Looks like not everyone is going to make the vote and this will hurt us but it's all in good fun anyway.

I like a lot of the teams in here but I'm only going to name my top 3.

Doc

If Brand is healthy you have a very scary team. Dirk and Brand can both work inside and out and are both effective defenders. The biggest thing is you can create major match up problems for most teams. If you are facing a big lineup that is giving you trouble then you can start Przybilla and Dirk which will give you a more traditional look but of course your man Dirk still creates match up problems. Then you have J.J. at 6'8" shooting over his man and doing a little bit of everything while being an extremely good 2nd/3rd option. Calderon can run your offense efficiently but may not be needed for much more than being a spot up shooter. Wallace is there for garbage buckets, fast break points and help defense to clog down the middle. From your bench Sessions can be your slasher while Bell will add great shooting and very good defense on your wings and of course you have nice depth inside with Joel and Lee. You may not have a great defender at PG but you may not have to with the talent and flexibility you have all around.

Paydro

I love your picks of Rondo, Ginobilli, Gasol and Nene. You have 4 very skilled players on both sides of the floor. Unfortunately I think your lack of another solid wing scorer is hurting you. Between Hill and Kirlenko I think it would have been better to add a guy who can stretch the floor. Still my love for Ginobilli and the overall defense that those 4 guys plus Hill, Kirlenko and Gortat can bring sways me back your way. I guess you could actually play Jamison at SF but he'd be even more of a turnstile than normal there.

Amcoolio

You may have the best back court tandem out there but you really lack depth here as well and the back court that rivals yours IMO is Paydros. Pargo and Hill can fill in effectively in limited minutes. I would not want to count on Rubio just yet in a championship run. I like the pairing of Peja and Batum. Between the two they almost make a whole SF and you have enough shooting on the floor between Billups/Aldridge/Roy to probably get away with Batum for good stretches. I'm with everyone else here though. You should be starting Bogut over Bynum and that is going to hurt you in my voting. However you have the most quality depth of any of our teams on the inside and that is a nice advantage in making a title run.

Funny how much difference we have in our opinions on these squads, and how much of it can hinge on individual players (Brand, for instance, was a negative to Fats and I, but a positive for Chabber and Sachmo).

I'm baracking for him just because he's an Aussie, but I couldn't pick him over Camby, Kaman, Davis or Okafor.

Anderson is too soft, he is like a taller, whiter version of Al Harrington, but not as skillful.

Is he the guy that got traded to the Magic from the Nets?

If not, then nevermind. I think the Magic got a better player in Anderson than they had in Lee. Don't know what the Nets were thinking.

You're thinking of Ryan Anderson.

That Anderson is buried on bench of my team having Nowitki, Brand and Lee ahead him in PF rotation and being pushed by Earl Clark a bit :D

Well you can subtract Brand from my rotation and have depth chart of my PF/C postitons like this:
PF - Nowitzki/Anderson/Clark/(Howard - inactive)
C - Przybilla/Lee
with Lee playing minutes either like undersized center of as PF. I just thought that this would be a bit weak C rotation and I wouldn't have enough scoring from C position. That's why Brand. I could draft Thabeet or some other untaken 7footer instead of Brand with the very last pick and got this C rotation:
PF - Nowitzki/Lee/Anderson/Clark
C - Przybilla/Thabeet/Lee
would you like it better?

Thabeet is worse than Przybilla in every way, and isn't as good as Brand either. I don't think drafting him was a mistake, and I'm not implying that you'd be better off cutting him... just that he isn't what he once was, and I'm not willing to make the leap of faith that he is once again the sort of monster defensively (or offensively) he once was.

Best case would have been to get a better true low-block center to play with Dirk and put Brand off the bench to play only sometimes the Brand/Dirk pairing. Offensively, Dirk operates almost always around the free throw line to just spin and shoot midrange J's over people's heads. The counterpoint to that isn't Brand, who doesn't really have great post moves, he's just long and pretty quick and scores a lot of points off of midrange J's himself.

Przybilla just doesn't bring anything on offense, which maybe isn't so bad if it trades off better with defense.

Well, Dirk should spread floor a bit and let Crash drive in easier, that's oen of the reasons too. I'm not saying Brand is still sure all-star but as 16th pick i think he is worth the gamble and it is hard not to let him start. Although it is more Nowitzki + Brand/Przybilla rotation depending on matchups.

I guess fourth isn't too bad. The two teams that tied for 2nd in NBA2k9's overall finished 2nd and 3rd. Actually now that I notice it I finished 4th in the NBA2k9 as well.

Through the magic of the "overall" formula:
2) Nugentrk: Offense 94, Defense 62, Overall 91
6) Amcoolio: Offense 94, Defense 81, Overall 83

If you actually average the two numbers, I'm pretty sure Coolio's does come out on top.
