"Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
Allright, so I'm bored, the board is dead while we wait for paint to dry (or for Felton to sign), so please help me with this senior capologist's:
ENGINEER A TRADE FOR US THAT INCLUDES FELTON FOR DAVID LEE
Please just find us some scenarios that will work before debating the merits of such a move. Keep in mind New York's desire to hang onto major cap room next year. I just want to know if it could get done with some assortment of players. Would they take Diaw and Felts for Lee and some other player(s)? That blows up their cap plans so I doubt it.
Bottom line is they want a PG, and we have our point of the future in DJ. We'd like to sign Iverson but can't see that happening with any contract Felts would sign to come back here (even the qualifying offer gives us heartburn). Lee may not be superman but I think he's a pretty rugged 4 that solves some issues we have (rebounding, inside scoring) while adding others (outside shot??). Diaw off the bench? Works for me.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
DJ Augustin is the PG of the future like Felton was the PG of the future?
And we don't need Lee for the price he's asking.
We drafted Adam Morrison - mistake.
Then we managed to turn that mistake into one more year of cap hit by trading Morrison for Radmanovic - mistake.
We signed Matt Carroll to a ridiculous contract - mistake.
We squandered a #8 pick and millions in salary cap space on what turned out to be Boris Diaw and Raja Bell.
We passed on Brook Lopez for the "PG of the future" (while we still had our first "PG of the future") - mistake.
We signed Okafor to a ridiculous contract - mistake.
We turned Okafor into someone who couldnt pass a physical to limit the extent of the contract signing - mistake.
Yes hindsight is 20/20 but when 90% of your major personnel moves are stupid its not hindsight - its just documenting the idiocy.
So, no - I don't want management to overpay for David Lee. What management should do is trade Bell to the Knicks for Jeffries contract and a future first rounder.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
...was any of that relevant at all to trading for Lee? Or are you just saying Felton for Lee is that level of overpaying?
Why would we want to pay Jared Jeffries 13m over two years? Raja is better, earns less, and will probably still be better and will DEFINITELY earn less next year.

Yes it was relevant in that we've made enough mistakes. No need to make more mistakes.
And yes Bell is better than Jeffries but this team isn't trying to win 2009-10. Its time for us to look to the future and a 33 year old guard on the wrong side of his career in the last year of his contract is only valuable to us because he's in the last year of his contract.

So a team that hasn´t made any mistakes is allowed to make a few, while a team that has should stop immiediately?
For me personally, I´ve just been avoiding making mistakes regardless of the circumstances, was that a mistake?

Umm, exactly, he's on the last year of his contract, why would we trade him for a 27 year old scrub who is NOT on the last year of his contract? Jeffries is awful, he's paid more, AND he's on the hook for more years. This is a lose-lose-lose.

OK, ....so....anyone out there able to construct a deal?
FWIW, I don't believe DJ is a starter in this league, but he's somebody's love child so we skipped Lopez for him. Watch who gets to the all-star game first.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
I guess Spec is on holiday. Felton and Lee are both BYC, so s&t's are really tough (impossible?). For argument's sake, Felton is signed to a deal starting at 6m, Lee 8m. If I understand correctly, we can only take back salary of 4.14m, Knicks can only absorb a salary of 4m. So we'd have to dump ~4m to get Lee, Knicks would have to free up ~2m. Both teams have some trade exceptions, so I'm not sure how that would come into play.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
There is no possibility of getting David Lee. He isn't worth the money he wants. Felton is a better piece and will cost less. There is talk that NY is going to give Lee a one year 7 mil deal. If we swapped for felts we would be right up on the cap with no room for AI.
In the Bell for Jefferies I like getting the pick from NY in next years draft, but I am thinking they don't have a pick to give us. In any case it won't happen because the additional salary would put us into the Tax. Also I think we will make the playoffs with the guys we have and could very well be competing for a championship soon after. Bell could still be in that mix, maybe not as a starter.....
Our best bet is to hope Vlad and Naz can play well enough in the beginning of the season that they become tradable assets. If not we let them expire in 2011 and use the cap space to go after a free agent, maybe Durrant.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
Wow, another embarrassing thread. First Iverson, now David Lee. Two of the worst defensive players in the league. However, I wouldn't mind Lee as a role player off the bench because we could use his energy and rebounding on the second team, but not at the money and minutes he wants. Contract length too, not wise to commit long term to a PF who doesn't play a lick of defense.
Oh and for the millionth time, the Knicks DO NOT have a first round pick next June. That pick is going UNPROTECTED to the Utah Jazz, courtesy of Isiah Thomas and Stephon Marbury.

Re: "Mary,..get me David Lee on the line"
As Walt said, double BYC is almost impossible unless a load of salary is swapping hands. Add to that we only have one expiring, which means any bigger trade between us & NY would have them taking on salary. I guess it could be possible to lure one of the two teams with capspace into a 3 way, but since neither NY or Charlotte even own their 1st pick what's their incentive?
BTW Walt, TPE's can't be combined, and ours are so small we really can't do much with those either.
Forget about Lee, esp. if Felton's the one you're trying to send out.

Fair enough, just wanted to see if anything was even feasable.
NOW, LET'S TALK ABOUT GETTING BOOZER!!!

Reread what I proposed and my point about this season. We aren't going to accomplish anything this season or next season. Thus, whether we have Raja Bell, Jarred Jeffries or Count Chocula on the team for the next two seasons its irrelevant. But if we can get a first rounder out of a bad roster slot thats much better. Its called planning.

Its not a subtle concept. If management made a questionable move you might be willing to cut them some slack if they did something ridiculous like take on Lee at the ridiculous price he is asking. They may have an insight or thought process you don't understand. But when your team's management has basically bungled every major personnel move they have made they do not deserve any benefit of the doubt.
