How are they gonna keep Felton N Tyrus?

Post#1 » by Dexmor » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:39 am

If they aren't willing to go over the cap even for 1 season they can not as I can see it.
Now if they are willing to go over the cap for just 1 year they can because the next year they are way under the cap.
They gotta figure out a way to get rid of Nazi and Tyson for a trade exception or something.

It would be so noble if Bob Johnson, in his last official act as Bobcats owner, bought out Gana's contract.

Outside of that very low percent, I really have no idea how they are gonna do it.

Depends on how Tyrus plays and meshes with the team, if we are a team than can seriously compete, then hopefully we take the hit for a year in anticipation of having a good team, creating some excitement, and FINALLY filling up TWC night in and night out. I think that making the playoffs and winning a first round series is a must for this to play out.

If the above scenario doesn't happen, I think they let Felts walk and sign a guy like Ridnour or Earl Watson to back up DJ. Just hold on to Nazr for the duration of his contract, trade Tyson at the deadline next year to get max value for teams chasing Melo or Durant. Hopefully get your new starting center out of that trade. MAYBE see if someone bites on Diaw.

At this time next year, I think the roster is:

DJ/FA PG(Ridnour/Watson/Duhon)
Jack/Hendo/Maybe an instant offense combo guy in the 2nd round?
Crash/UPS/Hulk (LB seems to like him, bet he gets a 2 year, $3 million or something)
Tyrus/Diaw/Lexy
Tyson (or new starting C)/Nazr/Gana

Buying out Diop does nothing. It still counts against the cap. Don't you think the Knicks would have just bought out Jeffries?

Is it possible to move Anybody for cap room?

We are about to get new owners aren't we?

Maybe the new owners won't object to temporarily dipping into luxury territory.

Its obvious they are willing to go over the LT for one season until the Frankencenter contracts start rolling off. We were going to go over the LT anyway next year if we resigned Felton and then had to sign other players to contracts.

We already know BRI is down this year and its likely the LT threshold will be in the $65m range. We are at $59m under contract for next season without Felton. If you assume Felton gets $6m per year to start we are at the luxury tax. We would only have 10 players under contract at that point and if we want to sign 2 more players [e.g., resign Law and Murray] we would be over the LT threshold.

I suspect ownership decided worst case they are going to be over the threshold costing them the $5-6m of tax distribution [though this might already have been lost as mentioned above] they would otherwise get in 2010-11 so the additional salary+tax paid to TT would be worth it to fill a dire need. Best case, they will have two attractive expiring deals in 2010-11 [Chandler/Nazr] and will be able to use them and/or likely other teams that will be below the cap next year [e.g., Wizards] to get under the cap or otherwise reduce the LT impact [e.g., the Raitliff trade we did].

This is not really that big of a mystery.

Buyouts can work if you can buy a player out at a discount but that rarely happens.

How sad is it, that getting out of those contracts is the most exciting thing we have to look forward to in a year and a half

whoever coined the term "frakencenter" for nazr, diop and chandler deserves a big high five. that's great.

Or there is supposed to be the Darko Milicic way. In theory.

Who knows - at this time next year maybe Lexy is pushing to be the starting C?

He's as big TC, would appear to block shots and rebound as well as TC, fouls as easily as TC - but at least he is considerably cheaper than TC and with a lot more offense and upside?

I think they are preparing for the realistic chance they wont retain him - but that's just good business sense.

Based on last summer though when I thought a deal would have got done, I doubt they keep him.

Based on a lot of the deals that this team has made, nothing would suprise me. Based on the fact that Tyson and Nazr will knock about $19 mil off the books after the 2010/11 season, it wouldn't really shock me to see the Bobcats keep Raymond and Tyrus.

I'm guessing if they have to pick one it will be Felton. I'm also guessing this is going to be a difficult transistion for Tyrus.

Why give up a pick just to have a 23 year old play for 2 months?

They'll find a way to cut salary. Think about it, we won't need to pay any draft picks anytime soon, lol.

Who said they are doing that? I was merely referring to that fact that if Tyrus ever thought he saw he knew challenges, he has no idea whats coming.

Hes got enough natural ability to be instantly effective. And if has any common sense, he'll realize just how ideal the Bobcats are for him.
