Back Up SG Options

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Tue Feb 23, 2010 2:42 am

Since trading Flip we obviously have a need at the back up 2 spot. Ideally we get a guy who can create his own shot and put the ball in the hoop, help with ball movement and oh ya, he has to be DIRT cheap!!

Here are some options I can think of. Who do you think would fit best?

* = Assuming they are waived/bought out of course!

out of that list, TMNT, because he knows the system. and i know i'm going to sound like a total unc homer, but if Larry could get his head straight, McCants would be a great option. I just dont feel the rest of that list could give us what flip did. We need natural scoring off the bench.

looked again, James White would be cool. and if paired with Boris, JamesOn could be a deadly 3 point man.

Mason. He's a flip clone, except a better shooter, less of a driver. However, if he's paired with DJ and Jack at the three, he can be extremely effective.

I actually wanted to add McCants and Von Wafer to the poll, but I already had too many options and the poll wouldn't let me!

Looks like Von Wafer is going to be signed by Dallas any ways I guess.

Mason would be useful as a 3pt specialist, something we don't really have on the roster right now. However, if you are looking for someone to create, he really isn't the guy. There is also the small matter of him being under contract to the Spurs right now.

I've seen Jameson Curry play in the DL a bunch, he sucks, not an NBA player.

James White is always interesting, Larry Brown's BFF Greg Popovich signed him once, so maybe LB will give it a go as well.

Mo Almond has deserved a call-up for a while now. I'll take him.

So are Hughes and James etc. Wasn't there talk of Mason getting a buy out because of the log jam at the SG in San An? Maybe Finley gets bought out? He might also be good?

You have probably watched more D League ball that anyone here e4 - what can you tell us about Mo Almond? Dudes seems to pile in the points every game, why no NBA love yet?

Can he create his own shot or is he more catch and shoot?

Did I read some where he might have a high opinion of himself. Could that be the problem?

FTR - I went with Mo Almond too.

McCants. LB claims he can handle high maintenance kids -- although I don't believe it's much handling, because he basically just lets those "kids" go out there for 40 minutes a game and do anything they want -- I want to see if he can handle a very talented headcase.

Seriously, he's young, talented, and has been a productive pro in the past, so give him a chance. And Lamar Odom married his leftovers. If nothing else, we can add that to the list of why we own the Lakers.
Humble yourself.

Sixers thinking about waving A.I

Post#11 » by Stun704 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:58 am

Should we sign A.I to the Vet minimum if this happens to fill flips spot?

Also if he did sign would be OK with backing up jax?

If he is waived, I think he will retire.

And No as he refuses to come off the bench and I wouldn't want him starting here.

In addition, there's not much reason to think that the family issues that are keeping him out in Philly won't continue to be a problem if he signed here.

It's time for him to hang 'em up.

For what it;s worth, I am beginning to think we erred in not trading DJ in the deal for Ford and Rush. What a crappy feeling it is in the pit of my stomach.

I knew someone would ask this question, lol. I doubt it happens, more so because of his sick child's situation than anything.

I'm not at all familiar with Mason's situation, but I can't imagine that the Spurs would give up a potentially useful player for nothing. Maybe if they could have squeezed a draft-pick out of it in a trade, but that ship has sailed.

As for Almond....

He's the undisputed best player in the D-League, a great scorer in every way possible. He probably shoots more than he drives but he's not a 1-dimensional shooter, and he goes to the free-throw line at a ridiculously high rate. He has good but not great handles and is a good but not great athlete, his points come more from guile and skill than vertical leap. Stylistically, he reminds me of a very very poor mans Paul Pierce.

As for the negatives, he doesn't pass much, although maybe that will change when he isn't far and away the best player on the court. I've never seen him do anything notable defensively, good or bad. And fairly or not he has a reputation as a mal-content. No idea if he deserves that label, but he was recently traded to Lexy's team for spare parts. His coach said the trade was done for better "chemistry,"

I think guys like Almond have a hard time getting called up because what he does (scoring, shooting) are not necessarily what NBA teams are looking for with an end-of-the-bench DL call-up. Guys like TMNT get called up despite being a clearly less talented player because they have the coveted end-of-the-bench skill set.(defense, passing, hustle)

I think if we are looking for "another Flip" than Almond is definitely the guy.
