I'm not a math person, anyone care to simplify our magic number at this point for me? not sure how it could be 9? 11 games left up 4 over the Bulls, i think we own the tiebreak. oh getting nervous about this, all i can see is us stumbling down the stretch and losing out on a playoff spot.

I think our magic number is 8.
It's 11 games left.
The tiebreaker is not decided yet. We will still face the Bulls twice this season and it's 1-1 at the moment. So till its not decided we count this thing as +1.
We are up by 4 games.
So its 11 (the games left of the season) - 4 (the margin we are ahead of the 9 spot) + 1 (cause we do not know the tiebreaker [if we win the tiebreaker than its 0]) = 8 (our magic number)

A magic number of 9 means that any combination of Charlotte wins OR Chicago losses totaling 9 games = we make the playoffs.
In the standings, a Charlotte win or a Chicago loss = .5 games.
To gain one game on someone in the standings, it actually takes two games. For Chicago to gain one game on us in the standings, it would actually take one CHI win and one CHA loss.
That's why our magic number is larger than the win/loss difference shown in the standings.

The games left means the games left for the 9th seed.
The margin we are ahead means how many more W we have.

I'll be shocked if we miss the playoffs...Our lead over the Bulls, and comparing our schedules, is the equivalent of being up 15 with 1:30 left in the game and Chicago hasn't really threatened that lead to go on a run in the remaining 1:30 all game.
After tonight, our magic number will be down to 7, and we have to play the Bulls twice. Win one of those and its down to 5.

It is 8 now. I did that pre-chicago loss.
Magic number = Number of games in a season + 1 - (games won by Bobcats + games lost by Bulls)
So 83 - (37 + 38)
83-75 = 8
