IIRC, Miami didn't re-sign him because DJJ got an offer from Portland Miami both couldn't and wouldn't match (2 years, $19M) because it was a massive overpay.
Miami has had plenty of players they've gotten incredible production out of only for them to leave and fall off, like Kendrick Nunn, Hassan Whiteside, Mario Chalmers, Tyler Johnson, James Johnson, Dion Waiters, Jae Crowder, PJ Tucker...etc. Gabe Vincent may join this club, as might Caleb Martin if he decides to leave.

This man is insane.
Has played great defense, despite being called for breathing too heavily a few times. I cannot believe he is paid less than an entry level RealGm Mod.

If Jones and PJ Washington didn't show up on offense, OKC would have won the series already IMO. They're giving the extra attention to Luka and Kyrie and telling PJ and Jones "you beat us" and so far they're saying "alright".
Mavs have to do everything they can to keep Derrick Jones next year. Try to trade Hardaway for no salary in return and give Jones the money if you have to.

It looks like DAL has finally found a pair of complimentary role playing forwards that fit next to Luka. Really happy for them, and for DJJ who is a great guy that just never found a true niche after leaving MIA.
He is a wild athlete with a good motor and when his 3 is dropping he is easily a upper tier 3/D guy.
I think DAL has to move THJ and ensure they can pay DJJ. Attach Hardy and it should be pretty easy to move off that $$$. (DAL can sign another designated bench gunner for the min or even BAE)

Seems like a no-brainer, is the difficulty that they don't have Bird rights? Looks like they have close to $20m under the 2nd apron (and could also dump Kleber or THJ to free up some more), and I'm assuming DJJ would want to come back for that amount. But since his contract was so short this year they don't have Bird rights, and since it was so small this year early Bird exception probably isn't enough $ to keep him.

You don't get bird rights on a 1 year deal.
"Jones is the only rotation player Dallas doesn't have under contract next season. Right now, the team could offer him $5.2 million via the taxpayer midlevel exception or clear salary to unlock the non-taxpayer midlevel to pay him up to $12.9 million to start."
I don't think there'll be an issue with him taking 12.9 but they'd have to clear salary and that's not always simple to do. If they can only offer the 5.2 mil I could see a team offering more but does he want to start over with another team for a few million more? He might or might not he said he wants to stay in Dallas but money will be an issue. He has only made about 30 million in 9 years.

Hes perfect in the role and in the system that hes in with Dallas. When teams want to sag off of him to focus on doubling Luka and/or Kyrie, he has thrived.
Hes set himself up for a great payday this summer. Nico Harrison needs to do whatever it takes to offload Tim Hardaway and re-sign DJJ long term.

Exactly. I dont think it's a bad thing. It means that he's good enough to get interest from a bunch of teams and he keeps getting shots.
Go Knicks!

He just averaged 29.3 minutes a game in round 1, shooting .385 from 3pt, averaging 1.5 blks and being a slithering nuisance pest with those inspector gadget arms. Per cleaning the glass, the Mavs defense was 16.1 points per 100 possesions with him on the court which is eye popping.
You know that when someone plays for your team, you actually get to know the player up close and you get confused how certain players just bounced around the league since they're so useful for you team and from the go, this guy has just been a no nonsense player who plays defense, was even to hit open 3 pointers and have the occasional drive to the basket. And of course... he can jump out of the building for some wow plays every now and then.
During the season, I looked up why the Bulls let him go and found social media posts where Bulls fans wanted to keep him. How did they not play him more/retain him? How did Miami of all teams not keep him? This can't simply be a case of being in a (much) better situation that unlocks his best talents.
D Jones Jr. was for the longest a terrible shooter, inconsistent defender who all he could do was dunk. That’s why he’s hitting 3’s now and actually using his athleticism to be a defender. Looks like the bulb went off. If he keeps this up he will get the MLe for a few years.

Re: How is Derrick Jones JR a journeyman?
The Bulls traded Lauri Markkanen for Derrick Jones Jr and a Portland pick (lottery protected through 2028).
They also had Daniel Gafford who was traded, along with Chandler Hutchison for Troy Brown Jr, Javonte Green Daniel Theis and cash. Theis left after a year, Troy Brown didn't do anything and Javonte got the most playing time out of the three (but has been playing out of position at PF).
