2nd option is 2nd best player. JDub is an elite defender. Garland is awful on D.

Very few 2nd options are best player or 3rd best player.

2nd option stands for 2nd offensive option

How many 2nd options are NOT the 2nd best player on their teams?

Lowry with the 2019 Raptors. Gobert with the Jazz. Bam when Jimmy was still in Miami. Jrue with the Bucks. Draymond with the Warriors. There are countless examples of 2nd best players on a team who were not the 2nd option.

So about 10% of playoff teams?

Go compare Jdub and Harden (his first year at the Rockets), when he finished 8th in the MVP and got his first All-Star.

Their stats are crazy similar right across the board on offence, as well as steals, blocks etc.

He also exceeds Harden of 2013, because Harden relied on 6 FT's made PER GAME to match Jdub 2025's output.

Now factor in Jdub's defence ratings ontop of the fact he's virtually a step up from Year 1 Harden at the Rockets.

Yeah, he's pretty good...

Imagine if Harden had been able to go against teams 2nd best defender. The 2nd best player on Harden's team was Chandler Parson.

I’d say his development has been hampered somewhat by the fact that he plays with SGA. Jdub grew up as a pg and was on the ball in college at Santa Clara and is at his best when he’s the primary ball handler on the floor when they stagger his minutes with SGA.

When he’s on the floor with SGA, his role is as a wing spot up shooter and scorer because SGA is an iso player who likes to operate with the ball on top. That’s like 90% of their sets. Jalen has adapted to that role pretty well but it is not his strength and there are games like today where he doesn’t make jumpers. And then all of the dumbasses say he sucks.

The truth is that Daigneault hasn’t really incorporated them well. It’s more like my turn, your turn like the Cavs were with Mitchell and Garland when Bickerstaff coached them. The best example of this is how OKC attacks the zone defense of Denver. Most teams flash a guy to the nail and enter the ball there to initiate offense. Daigneault just brings a guy up and sets a high screen for SGA and lets him go to work. That’s all he does. What he could do is flash Jdub to the nail, pass him the ball and let him operate as a point from the foul line. This would be a devastating set because of Jdub’s skill but we never see it. And now it’s probably too late because they haven’t worked on it.

But Jdub’s real development will come when he learns to use his length and leverage like a pg because he can handle like a pg. He doesn’t do that well right now and the effect is that he exposes the ball and plays smaller than he is. He should watch tape of Brunson and Garland to learn how to use his leverage better. When he does that, he’s going to be a real beast.

Caruso's better.

Had to bump this thread after Jalen's 40 point performance in the finals. If we're stuck with the hyperbolic "doesn't pass the eye test thread", we might as well have the other hyperbole refreshed after J.Dub's big dub!
