He has really struggled getting volume free throws so far in his career, and he said at the beginning of the season that it was something he wanted to improve on. I think part of it was he was shooting a lot of fadeaway shots, but as the playoffs have gone on he has realized he has to force his way to the basket. Add on the physical nature of this series and he is finally being rewarded. If it permanently unlocks a new aspect of his game that is a major problem for the rest of the league.

Portland will swing on Demin or Essengue is he's there and miss out AGAIN.

If he's a guy OKC or SA would draft, then YOU SNAKE him. I swear scouts should study the types of player they look for and beat them to it.

Well, I guess JDub didn't want to have to move to Milwaukee!

But in all seriousness, I ain't trading this dude to hard cap my team with Giannis -- who could even be hurt come playoff time.

Ya to me a lot of the J.Dub criticism is just fans not understanding defensive value.

He's the opposite of Baker/Coleman/Randle in that those are classic guys who are talented offensive players who's impact on winning was questionable looking back. J.Dub is the opposite. We're not sure how far his scoring game might go, but we know for a fact that he's an absolutely elite defender and a master of the little things.

He's closer to Scottie Pippen than he is Coleman. Not saying he's on Pippen's level at this point, but this is kind of like what Pippen was: a productive but non-resilient scoring threat who dominated on defense and as a playmaker. Scottie was a much much better athlete, to be real about the comp.

I'm not comparing him to those guys to say they are similar in playing style; I'm saying that their impact on the game, the zeitgeist, stardom are all similar. All those guys I listed made multiple All-NBA teams but nobody remembers them as star players or as ever having a real important impact on the game, and I think the same will be the case for Jalen Williams. The first two guys I mentioned earlier were Luol Deng and Danny Granger; neither made any All-NBA teams but both are more similar to the Jalen Williams archetype as strong defensive minded forwards.

I just think the guy is a bit overrated because he's on a team with the MVP that won a lot of games.

point is "star" is a trash category bro, give it up
all it matters is impact and you as a pacers fan should know about that the most since you have haliburton, a high impact player (top 6 xrapm in 2025) that you would never know because he's not enough of a nuclear scoring force to warrant "star" label if he's team is not winning enough.

I can’t even engage with people who use that term too tough, especially pertaining to basketball players.
First and last time I open this thread, it’s gotten way too much traction. If Jalen didn’t pass your eyes even as a rookie you need LASIK and them thick ass aquarium lenses.

Jalen Williams is steadily improving in every round but let's be real here.. defenses isn't gearing up to stop him as their #1 priority. Also I believe he's a bit of a front runner. Pacers inability to stop his straight lines drives is just comical at this point.. but kudos to Jdub for capitalizing on their mistakes nevertheless.

Great 40 pts performance in the finals ala Khris Middleton a few years back.

There'a list of about 15 names since 2005-2006 (plus more history if you're some paid member on the site  ), but it's a list of pretty elite players obviously:

Dub has been brilliant the past few games, no doubt.

Statmuse just freaking sucks though. This is low level engagement farming at its best.

Jaylen Williams willingly sacrifices for the team playing out of position PF/C when Chet/Ihart were injured.
He's a great defender and complements SGA well!
OKC frontoffice wasn't going to trade JDub even with some bad games.

Jalen Williams just posted the worst +/- in NBA Finals history (since this was tracked starting in 97.)

He was -40 in game 6.

I stand by what I said earlier in this thread.

I said this during the Denver series, but I do think that for this series.

I guess it depends how highly you think of him. He's a really good player and a worthy All-Star, but nowhere close to SGA in terms of impact. I think some overrated him because he's the clear 2nd option on a juggernaut team. He's in a favorable situation surrounded by (a) a superstar that draws the most defensive attention (b) elite defenders all around him and (c) selfless offensive players who move the ball and space the floor.

As others mentioned though he's still young and improving. The fact that he's already an all-star with a well-rounded game bodes well for his future.

+/- is often misleading though.

Caruso was -33

Dort was -28

Whole team played poorly, Jalen just played played more minutes those guys.
