He had a player option, opted out and became an unrestricted free agent.

Right, but you can most often keep your guys if you pay more than other offers, and Houston really isn’t paying him much.

So this is either a situation where the Lakers were looking to offer a guy who is worth way more to them than market value, less than market value.

Or, DFS just wanted out.

In either case, this seems pretty bad for the franchise.

I think its like you said in the other thread, he just wanted out. Gets to go back to Texas too, where he spent 6.5 seasons.

The word is they want to maintain maximum flexibility for 2026.

Makes sense if a big name becomes available to pair next to Luka next summer. They were probably fine with DFS opting in and paying him for one more year but didnt want to give a 4 year contract to a 32 year old who is only going to decline from here on out

I understand that, but I figured they would've had the opportunity to match or beat the offer based on his connection to Luka and this was more of a Lakers decision than dfs decision. I guess it's possible he genuinely preferred Houston based on their championship chances

They want to have access to the non tax payer MLE to use for a center. If they retained DFS they could only pay the taxpayer MLE which is significantly lower. Basically they traded dfs for their center, capela ayton or whomever they center is. IMO that is a bad deal. They would be hard capped at tax level which is pretty low.

He will be missed, but 4 years for a 32-year-old will hurt by yr 3/4

Rafael Stone man. Houston is not f'ing around. Just get Whitmore out of there and it's go-time.

Amen Thompson sneaky all-star caliber year loading?

Now you have Amen, Eason, Finney-Smith and Jabari to be defenders. And Jae'Sean Tate is pretty good in that department as well. Durant better make shots, they're putting everything he can possibly need around him.

The Rockets add a 3 & D guy to replace Dillon Brooks. Makes perfect sense, and Tari Eason can learn from Finney-Smith like he did with Brooks.

HOU contenders? I like DFS on offense more than Brooks

Didn't feel comfortable giving a 32 year old role player a 4-year deal

they're both good spot up shooters but hot ass when they have to put the ball on the floor, DFS is a more discipline and versatile defender that's where I give him the edge

Difference is that DFS will rarely play outside of himself whereas Brooks thinks that he is a superstar on offense frequently
