His reputation was shot in his later years as stories came out about his politicking and some things he had said.

He's still a wrestling icon and that can never be taken away. I'd say that no other wrestler managed to achieve the same level of cultural significance during the time they were the #1 guy carrying the WWE. Not Austin, Cena, Reigns or Rhodes. Someone like the Rock has attained a higher level of cultural significance but not during the time he was the face of the WWE.

I dunno about Stone Cold. That era of WWF was so much more popular than Hulk's era.

The Attitude era is certainly more beloved and it was the era that saved the WWE from bankruptcy but in terms of cultural awareness and fan draw I think the Golden era of the 80s still tops it. As popular as he was in the late 90's/early 2000s Austin was not mainstream popular like Hogan was.

Austin is more highly regarded than Hogan but I'm confident in saying that he was not as big as Hogan was during the latter half of the 80's.

Hogan appealed to kids and parents were fine with buying their sons Hulk Hogan lunch boxes. Austin appealed to those same kids in their teenage years but he wasn't marketed to little kids to the same degree as Hogan.

I posted the rating numbers after. I mean...the rates were more than double.

A very flawed human, judged on a standard rarely applied to others in his industry with the same faults. Legend either way.

Doesn’t work for me brother…

The world is a better place without people like him.

with certain demographics, yes. but the Golden Era was as mainstream as it gets. Hulk Hogan was welcome in just about any family room. Stone Cold and the Attitude Era, not so much.

I mean say what you will but the audience size is the size.

The graph shows how viewers flocked to the WWE during the attitude era. Austin is the main reason for that. The graph however cannot be used to compare with the Golden Age as it doesn't go back that far. Monday Night Raw wasn't even a thing during Hogan's peak.

By all means show me anything that has the ratings higher in the late 80's or even close to that. I can't find any nice neat charts but it wasn't even close man.

Edit

I didn't think about WWF being on network with like 5 to maybe 10 shows a year being on network. So yeah, I'm sure those got higher ratings. But we're comparing a handful of shows a year vs every single week getting 5-7 million viewers over the course of a year. Not actually sure how you compare that.

All these people smack talking Hogan after he's dead is pathetic. Everyone acting like theyre perfect human beings. I hope people dance on your graves for all the imperfections you have in your life.

We know him as a performer and thats the part that is being mourned. The people that actually know him as a human being can discuss the things youre crying about.

What are the imperfections.

The WWE appeared on network television while they were on cable TV during the 90s. They also had a syndicated weekly Saturday morning show during the Golden Era that drew in younger audiences. Unfortunately there's no apples to apples comparison to be made when it comes to TV ratings.

The WWE was more mainstream during the Golden Era vs. Attitude Era and Hulk Hogan was a babyface for the masses while Austin had more of an anti-authority appeal. Both were a product of their time. Austin is more beloved by wrestling fans but Hogan had a wider range of appeal and was more recognized by non wrestling fans.

The WWF/WWE may have been more popular in the attitude era, but Hulk Hogan was still the biggest star and arguably the only one to transcend wrestling itself and becoming recognizable even to non-fans. Worldwide, that is. I think that Dwayne Johnson surpassed him and became the bigger superstar but a lot of his fans like him because of the movies and have never seen him wrestle. While Hogan never really managed to break away from his wrestler persona, The Rock certainly did so.

I feel for all the fans who have once again lost a part of their childhood that will never come back, but I find it hard to miss Hogan personally. He might have been popular, but his movies were terribly bad, his gimmick was ridiculous and his wrestling mediocre at best (both appealing to kids, of course), and he seemed to have been an egotistical prick of a teammate and an awful human being, Good riddance.

I really struggle to see the "Golden Era" has being close honestly but that was a long time ago. During the attitude era it was something everyone talked about. They were on TV more and it was selling out. Video game sales were nuts. But...yeah no way to really do apples to apples.

Pretty much. What exactly did he even do to any of these internet warriors? Did he rob them at gunpoint? Did he break in to their house? Did he steal their car? Did he steal their wife or GF? Did he ponzi them out of money?

The only people that should have beef with him, are other wrestlers that feel he screwed them out of a push. To which yes, there's probably a good handful of those.

A legend in the 80’s/90’s, but he wore out his welcome in the WWE and ruined TNA to the ground in the 2000’s.

Nonetheless, RIP

He robbed quite some time by telling all those lies. Even though that is somewhat entertaining in its own way as he was obviously struggling a lot to remain relevant and popular.

Got to see him at the peak of his NWO thing when I attended WCW Bash at the Beach in San Diego, circa 1998. He was in the main event, paired with Dennis Rodman against Diamond Dallas Page and Karl Malone. It was a pretty cool spectacle and the only pro wrestling event I've ever attended. Dude definitely put on a good show. He wasn't the best human being, but he was one of the very best in his craft. A consummate showman to the end.

I have fond memories of the 80's when he was THE guy for WWF. Remember watching the cartoon, too. Hard to believe all these classic guys from my childhood are passing on, but they lived their lives hard and fast. That stuff takes a heavy toll and it's kind of surprising for some of them to have lived this long.

I'd prefer not to lock this but there's nothing constructive going on in this this thread, certainly nothing basketball related, and I'm sure there are lots of other places on the internet where folks are able to share their thoughts on Hulk Hogan. Thank you please drive through to the next window.
