Create the greatest offense of all time

Post#42 » by sikma42 » Fri Sep 26, 2025 1:20 am

I don’t think Jordan’s skill set fits in a GOAT offensive team. He’s primarily a mid range player and there are better players to act as primarily facilitator. Don’t think it would make sense to include him. Would prob do something like:

Steph
Klay
KD
Lebron
Jokic

Or

Steph
Klay
KD
Lebron
Giannis

The three point shooting around peak LeBron would just be gamebreaking.

Why Klay over Ray

If I'm putting someone in the pure movement shooter role, I'd go Reggie Miller. Ray is a good one too, and an upgrade over Klay in the same role.

If it's just offense.

Curry
Reggie
Lebron
Dirk
Jokic

is my best crack at this.
- I can see going Bird instead of Dirk just to increase the passing. I see people putting KD in here, but for me I want a better screener out there to maximize Curry's (and Reggie's or Klay/Korver/Ray) movement shooting.
- The other dilemna is Jokic vs. Shaq. Jokic is a much better, and more versatile offensive player, but Shaq gives you 11/10 rim pressure. I think we could rely on Lebron for rim pressure. All the other guys give you a little rim pressure at least. Dirk is a good driver, and Reggie could attack the paint and get to the line.

Other players I consider for these all-offense lineups: MJ, Magic, Kareem, Nash, Oscar, Kobe, KG, Durant, Barkley, Harden, Manu. (Already mentioned Bird and Shaq above.)

For me, you need to have:

1. One of the truly elite playmakers: Magic, Jokic, Nash.
2. One of the elite movement shooters: Curry, Reggie. (Ray, Bird, Klay etc. but I think Curry and Reggie are the top 2 at this role).
3. A monster rim pressure force: Lebron, MJ, Shaq, Barkley.
4. Guys who are all-time great offensive players who can operate as screeners in this offense (Jokic, Dirk, Bird, Shaq.)
5. Game breaking go-to scorer: Kareem, MJ, Dirk, Kobe, Kawhi.
6. Someone who can be insanely versatile: Manu, Bird, Lebron, KG.

Lots of good options here. For my preference this specific moment (can change if I answered this another day):

Stephen Curry
Reggie Miller
Magic Johnson
Lebron James
Nikola Jokic

Magic was always playing next to small guards, so I don't see why I should pick him or Curry, or have to have him as a "guard" technically. I could also go Bird instead of Reggie and have a bigger lineup. I also considered KG to set illegal, I mean great screens for my shooters and be a connecting passer, but he's less of a 3PT shooter than everyone else career wise even though we know he can shoot.

Lebron is going to be running out in transition, either with or without the ball, and Curry and Reggie are running to the 3PT line, Jokic is looking up the floor to to hit guys with inbound passes, and Magic with the ball is looking for everyone in transition. So I have a strong transition attack, and then in the half court Magic, Jokic or Lebron can initiate with Curry and Reggie off ball getting screens and forcing the defense to move, and everyone can find everyone.

Other option:

Stephen Curry
Michael Jordan
Klay Thompson
Larry Bird
Nikola Jokic

This one, if I want to use MJ, I want more guys who are moving the ball, and he's the rim pressure and iso guy. I'm opening up the floor for MJ, but multiple options to run the offense, and lots of connecting guys. This is of course younger MJ, not post up MJ as I need the guy going at the rim more.

I think transition might be a little weaker here, but similarly, tons of options in the half court, and Jordan can play off ball and will have a lot more finds cutting for layups and dunks and space to the rim coming off screens as the defense is trying to remember where Curry and Klay are.

Just add LeJokic to the 2017 Warriors and you’ll never be able to create a better offense.

I might take Chris Mullin. His shooting ability is up there with those guys, but he was also a great passer, so that opens up opportunities for cutters.

I'm starting with Curry and Jokic combo. It's a no-brainer. Elite passing and elite off ball shooting, and Curry is also a terrific PnR operator.

I'm definitely adding KD to the combo because he is the best all-time great offensive player at scoring without dominate the ball, making him fit in well on a GOAT offensive team. He provides elite spacing, excellent slashing and finishing, and he can score in iso if that's what you need from him.

The other two positions are tougher.

I want one more playmaker - Bird, Magic and Lebron are the best. But the playmaker also needs to be effective off ball for when I'm running the offense through Jokic. So, for that reason I think I'm ruling Magic out. He's not a quick-release shooter nor a dominant slasher or alley-oop threat. If he doesn't have the ball he is no longer a GOAT offensive player. Bird is a better off ball spacer, and Lebron is a better slasher/alley-oop threat. I think I'm going with Lebron to give the team more fast-break punch. Having Lebron (and Durant) as recipients of Jokic outlet passes provides a whole extra dimension that the team would otherwise lack.

The last player is going to be shooting guard, the best shooter I can get. So it's either Reggie, Ray Allen, Klay or Jordan. Since I went with Lebron - a limited shooter - I think I need a guy with more 3-point range so Jordan is out. Reggie is probably the best off-ball movement shooter of the bunch, but do I really want to run off-ball movement shooter plays on a team with this many options? If I assume that my engine of Lebron/Jokic/Curry is going to bend the defense so much that I'm getting wide open catch-and-shoot looks from Durant and my shooting guard, I might just want the best stand-still catch-and-shoot guy ever, which is Klay, due to his insanely quick, high release point. So I'll go with Klay.

Curry
Klay
Lebron
Durant
Jokic

He’s primarily a mid range player and there are better players to act as primarily facilitator. Don’t think it would make sense to include him. Would prob do something like:

Steph
Klay
KD
Lebron
Jokic

Or

Steph
Klay
KD
Lebron
Giannis

The three point shooting around peak LeBron would just be gamebreaking.

Why Klay over Ray

Faster release than Ray and think was a better overall shooter than Ray. He also extremely clutch, good leader, and fits into a team concept. People don’t seem to like Ray (but that’s just extra reasoning).
