I had this thought as well. The sciatica report kind of came out of nowhere and it was after the Lakers made it clear they wouldn't give him an extension. He can't ask for a trade since no one is willing to trade their assets for an aging superstar. So this might be his last play.

So what is the strategy here?

Step 1. Sit out and jeopardize chance at all NBA.

Step 2. Lakers are not good because they don't have their 2nd team all NBA player, something everyone would know would happen anyway.

Step 3. Profit.

The Lakers have Luka. You want them to magically add another top 10 player and then have LeBron return?

But it didn't come out of nowhere. Weeks prior to the sciatica announcement Redick mentioned LeBron was dealing with "sensitive nerves in his glute" which drew me into a conversation (outside of RealGM) wondering why they weren't using the term "sciatica" for what seemed likely to be a sciatica issue. Were they hiding the sciatica? Was it something even worse?

Then they announced the sciatica and everything made sense.

I'm probably just making something up but I dunno. I've been wondering how Bron feels about his team prioritizing and building around a different player for the first time in his career and if it could potentially cause a little drama for the Lakers this season.

Lakers have been building around Davis over Lebron for 5 years. LeBron is well aware that he's too old to commit a build around, he's not even sure if he will play the next season until the preceding offseason, been that way for 3 years.

It's much more likely that both LeBron and Lakers agreed on him seeing out his deal so that next offseason he can play his final season elsewhere if he chooses to with minimal backlash (not declining an option).

Luka is good enough to carry a garbage roster to a .500 record.

Mark Walter didn't buy the team for $10 billion to deal with any drama from Lebron. The Buss family are pushovers but that's not the case with Mark Walter. Walter lives in a different universe than the Buss family and Lebron.

Sure! AD has been the cornerstone of the Lakers for the last 5 years? The building block the Buss family has built around? AD has been the nucleus to the Atom? If you say so.....

But unfortunately Walter will have to deal with Jeannie and by extension Lebron(who she apparently adores) because Jeannie will still be running things for the next 4 years per the sale agreement. I feel bad for Lakers fans because I know they would truly love the Lakers to be run like the Dodgers are. Instead Jeannie and her clique including Kobe's BFF probably arent going anywhere. Hell Jeannie might even assure Lebron that Bronny is guaranteed a spot even after he retires as long as she's in charge.

I think the longevity records like most points etc. mean a lot to LeBron, so I honestly doubt he is missing a single game more than he has to. He's been getting a lot of positive press for all the longevity stuff so to me he wants to pile on to those stats as much as he can, and it is why I can see him playing until his body gives out.

They made it clear they were not building around AD when they let Javale and Dwight walk for nothing and then made zero attempt to sign a center for the next 4 years until they traded him lol.

Let Dwight walk for nothing  right into retirement. Dude played 18yrs, was 37yrs old and you act like he went on to show LA why they should've resigned him lol
