OKC will be a legit contender for awhile, and have done a real good job drafting and making trades, etc.
But longer-term, where OKC has gone wrong collectively, is giving too much money to all their top guys, and the lack of foresight by the players. The sustained longer-term success is at decent risk, and inevitable, to have missing flexibility in making moves when three players are taking up the majority of their cap space later on.
San Antonio with their big three (Duncan/Ginobili/Parker) worked out deals in multiple contractual periods from each over their prime contending years, for less than market value to retain sustained long term flexibility.
Key to why the Spurs were contenders for so long, also they probably don't win the 2014 title if Parker/Ginobili/Duncan all had taken more money from their last contracts before then.
Spurs big three aren't the only lead star players to have done this, but more often than not, players don't do it and sacrifice longer-term team flexibility for success.
Jalen Brunson in New York is another example.
