JVG on Defense

Check this out, I thought this was really cool and informative. Basically there's audio commentary and a visual representation on how teams defend in the most common scenarios.

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

I'm already familiar with all those (except a few parts on the Yao one), but that is a good refresher/enhancer, and learned some things.

Very good stuff there.

Can someone give me a link to the 1999 NBA playoffs fight where JVG is latched on to Alonzo Mourning's leg?

That is what I mean, when I say that you can only understand basketball properly if you have been exposed to a certain level of professional basketball hence being a player or in some way affiliated to a pro level team.

Pro Basketball is just too complex to pick up by casually watching NBA on TV, even for years. You need a certain insight to grasp the tactical concept.

Guess why the USA did not win the last Olympics and World Championships even though they had the allegedly most talented players ? It was because winning a basketball on such a high level is not about talent, but about tactical intelligence. That's why Euro's are usually smarter players. They just get exposed to the tactical aspect of the game very early, while American players at a younger age just seem to rely on their natural athleticism. Prime examples would be players like Gerald Green, JR Smith and James White. They only made it to the league because of their outstanding natural talent but then failed to make the transition because of their lack in tactical knowledge.

Yeah, because it's a pretty fast moving game, with a lot of motion and variables, with ten guys on the court.

I haven't been a player or affiliated, but over-time, I've studied and learned about the game, on purpose, or just from paying attention in general. From either seeing games again (for certain reason(s) or because I wanted to see the game again as a whole), and just from seeing games from game to game on the season. Myself not being a casual viewer.

Yeah, that is really cool that you pay attention to stuff like that. For me, being able to understand the tactical aspect makes watching basketball worthwhile.

that is good stuff. this guy knows his defense. it was always scoring points that was the problem. but defensively, he can draw up a gameplan.
