The next season he returned to the NBA and he went for 18.2ppg.
The fact that a 36 year old can go the the Euroleague and be the best player says something. He led his team to the championship also.

I don't believe Manu was ever the Euroleague MVP. I think he was the Italian League MVP and the Suproleague Final Four MVP, but I do not recall that he was actually ever the Euroleague MVP.
He was named the 2001 Euroleague Finals MVP and the Italian League MVP in both 2000-01 and 2001-02.

His stats in the 96/97 year with SAS were 18PPG 2AST 6,4RBS and that was after he came back from europe the first time. So the year he was great in europe he was accually still very great in the NBA the year after.

About euro leagues (Italy, Spain etc) there is another info to add: in the '80s and early '90s, the teams were made usually by 2 american players, maybe one european one and then all domestic players.
And the american players were often "big names" such as Bob McAdoo, George Gervin, Brian Shaw, Darryl Dawkins etc
And these american players usually were the 80% of the offense of their teams, averagin easly 25-28 ppg.
Since the mid-late '90s now the teams are much more mixed with domestic players, european players and american ones (but hardly more NBA "mvps" like those in the '80s); so no more americans with 28 ppg.
