James Worthy- AKA "Big Game"

The late great Chick Hearn gave James that name because he always came to play in big games.

Funny story from guy I work with who used to cover the Spurs --

Old-school enforcer Billy "The Whopper" Paultz is walking through the locker room after a Rockets game way back in the day, takes off his towel proceeds to dress. An observer's eyes widen after he happens to catch a glance at Billy's rather gigantic member. Moses Malone, seated in the adjacent stall, notices and mumbles, "Now you know why we call him The Whopper."

David Lee- DaWhite Howard (ppl actually thought his rebounding was comparable to Dwight's for awhile, plus he's white)

Baron Davis- Boom Dizzle (he can explode any night)

Pietrus/Barnes- Trainwreck (pretty self-explanatory)

DaWhite Howard...ROFL whata joke.

Best nick name for Bron is "Video Game James." Because you can only put up his numbers in 2k8

"Penny" Hardaway, because when he was growing up his grandmother used to call him pretty, but with her accent it sounded like penny.

"Mr. 4th Quarter" Hedo, because how much he scores in the 4th. I'm pretty sure this is only an Orlando thing though, I haven't seen him referred to this anywhere else.

"Big Shot Billups" Pretty obvious, he makes the big shots

"Jesus Shuttlesworth", Ray Allen, because of his starring role in a basketball movie.

Everyone knows "Free Money" Tyrus Thomas because of the free money comments before last year's dunk contest.

Captain Kirk (Hinrich), because he's one of our team captains and it rolls off your tongue due to Star Trek... gay.

Nocioni's nickname is "El Chapu" after a crazy cartoon character in Argentina that was hyper all the time.

Ben Wallace's common nickname in Chicago was "The Body" because of his ridiculous physique.

Stacey King named Oleksiy Pecherov "Stewie" cause he looks like Stewie from Family Guy.

Our mentally challenged coach calls Chris Duhon "Sea Doo" which is another one of those first letter of the first name, first syllable of the last name nicknames (C-Du). It just so happens to be the big manufacturer of personal watercraft.

Glen Davis is called Big Baby because when he was a kid, he was so big that he played football with the older kids and he cried a lot.

LeBron James

King James: He's called King James in Ohio since his high school years. Probably he nicknamed himself King and it spread to everyone.
It's also referring to historic figure King James.

The Chosen One: Because he's so gifted and talented naturally.

These two early nicknames of him was also used in one of his rookie year Nike Commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK3LZc03Ua4

Video Game James: Because game comes so easy to him he can make tough plays look so easy. As I recently learned from the Cavs posters in realgm, Drew Gooden gave him this nickname.

L-Train: I think FSN Ohio commentators gave him this nickname. Because he's as powerful and fast as a train and when he's driving to the lane nobody can stop him.

BronBron: Because when he was a kid his mother was calling him that way.

Mehmet Okur

Money Okur: Because he's clutch!
