Would JVG be a good fit in Denver?

Next year, if George Karl is fired (which I think he should be)... do you guys think Jeff Van Gundy would be a good fit/replacement there? Do you think he could actually get anyone of those guys (besides Camby) to play defense?

Denver doesn't need help with their D....they are, in fact an above average team, perhaps even top 10 if i remember correctly. Their problem is their offense, despite having AI and Carmelo.

He is waiting on the Piston job. Better believe if Flip doesn't reach the Finals this year he'll be fired. Detriot is the ideal place for JVG.

As far as the Nuggets. IMO he would probably try to avoid coaching a West team. Its just too stressful.

Truth is, we lie somewhere in between.

We are not the no-defense team that many 15-years olds on this forum claim us to be, even we have glimpses of shut down defense, but we need to adjust several things in order to be competitive night in, night out. We are second in the league on "Opposing team 3PT attempted" and "Opposing team 3PT made" because we give so many open looks. Some nights the team is lazy to rotate, sometimes they're dumb enough to bite and leave a shooter open, and even Camby can be a liability if the opposing team knows how to play him, because he won't move away from the basket ever.

At the same time, we need some organization on offense. We're the ultimate "ISO team" and we don't move the ball. We're 13-0 when the team gets 30+ assists.

Our new coach should be a motivator, who force them to play hard every night, teach them how to rotate on defense, scream at Melo when he don't fight on screens, yell at Camby when he stays under the basket to stuff stats instead to put a hand on the mid-range open shooter, design some plays on the offensive end, show Carmelo and AI how to pick-n-roll properly, make them move the ball, bench Anthony Carter and don't call his young players out on the media.

If JVG fits that bill...

Yeah, pretty much sums it up. No low-post threat to run plays through also hurts as well. That's why I think Nene would be a big asset, if used correctly.

Their check list should be:

1. Get a PG

2. Stop the ISOs & formulate an offense

3. Play in a more organized way. Show boating can only be done in spurts.

Rudy T would be a better fit with Melo/AI--he's a player's coach, and his offense in the early 00's was mainly iso plays.

the defensive problem is overblown..

their biggest problem is consistency offensively outside of Melo/AI.

Coaching as a whole is the problem. GK doesn't have control of the team and they do too much freelancing. Too many unnecessary 1 on 1's and less organized B-Ball. Hell, any coach would probably be an upgrade.

You pretty much described JVG to a T there. Although I can't make any guarantees about benching Carter ...

I think JVG would be a great fit in Denver. As far as the offensive end goes, a coach that is capable of incorporating good ball movement and discipline into a pick-and-roll/iso hybrid system that defines every player's role well would make that transition seamless. Those saying they don't need any help on defense are not correct -- they have been one of the better teams in the league efficiency wise, but they are still inconsistent and undisciplined in that department, and their opposing eFG% leaves much to be desired. Those are problems that JVG will fix right away. Let's just hope that Iverson makes it on time to practice, because he's a no-nonsense coach who won't hesitate to issue a DNP-CD for stuff like that.

I find the Nuggets problem is their inconsistent offence. They live by the jumpshot, and die by the jumpshot. Their offence is too unorganized, and they should be using the Pick n Roll a lot more.

Id like to see what JVG could do in Denver.
