What if scenario

This is really random, and so far out there. I'm not sure how I even thought of it. Its out there enough it might belong on Off Topic, but whatever.

What do you think the league would do, if by a tragedy, say a plane crash, a whole team's NBA roster was killed.

Would they field a team of replacement players for the rest of the season? Would they just forfeit the rest of their games for that year?

Then in the following off season what would happen?

Would the team be treated as an expansion team?
Would they enter the free agency and draft just like any other team?
Would they be rewarded some compensation picks, perhaps inbetween the first and second rounds?

I know this is a weird topic, and I'm not sure if the league already has a rule about what they'd do (doubtful), but I was curious as to what you all think would happen.

thats a weird situation and im sure the league hasnt made up a RULE about it....

ive actually always wondered this too... i think probably they would be forced to promote D-League players and sign free agents... im guessing that the dead players would no longer count against the cap but im not sure... i dont think they would get any compensation but the team would have like 57 million if free cap space for free agents! so if that were to happen to the orlando magic i would

Well, the current rule is that a player who dies under contract wouldn't count against the cap (I guess it fits under the disabled player exception). So I would think they'd do the same for the whole team. However I wonder what the structure of a typical NBA contract is like as far as payments to a players family if they passed away. Like if a player were to die, does the team still pay all or part of his contract to whoever is left behind, like wife,kids,etc. If this was the case, the team would essentially have two payrolls, even if the NBA only recognized one.

I'm sure they'd pull out of the season, no way it would be possible, worthwhile or respectful to bring in 12 new players midseason

the real question is, would they be better or worse, than the New York Knicks?

and, if it was the celts, would Zeke still try to trade for KG's mangled corpse?

I don't know, but the Knicks are the only franchise where you could legitimately say they would be better off* after than before.

*just from a basketball standpoint. when considering everything else, it would be crippling to a franchise.

i think with all that cap room most teams would be better off after then before.... not to mention all that national spot light, games on tv, new fans, 12 new jerseys to sell... i would say that you could probably build a championship team with all that cap room and probably a lottery pick in the draft

This has actually happened in Soccer. In 1958 a plane carrying Manchester Utd and other officials and reporters crashed and 23 people died including 8 Man U players. They're referred to as The Busby Babes.

That would almost be more/as detrimental to the NBA than if a whole team died.

I'm not entirely sure , i tried looking up information but only found info on the actual crash. I'm a Liverpool supporter myself so i don't really know a heck of alot about Man U. Might be worth looking into further though.
