Question regarding Phx trading Deng pick to Chi

Post#1 » by deanx » Sun Mar 16, 2008 7:38 pm

I was always under the impression that Phoenix traded the pick that turned into Deng to Chicago because they needed cap room to sign Kobe in addition to Nash. Obviously the attempt for Kobe failed but why is everyone now saying that Colangelo traded Deng pick to save money and comparing it to the Rondo or Rudy Fernandez trade. So can someone confirm this matter for me, did BC trade Deng to make cap room to sign Kobe or did he do it to save money?

Thanks

It was done to save money, but money against the salary cap (so they could sign Kobe or Nash/QRich) rather than the luxury tax (as with recent Phoenix deals).

Phoenix also assumed Chicago would likely be a lottery team again, so getting the Bulls' pick the next year looked more valuable when the trade was made then the #21? pick Phoenix ended up with.

If they kepty Deng, it wouldve been on a rookie contract, so it would've been that big of a hit to their "cap space".

They did it because the owner didnt want to pay luxury tax.

At least thats the only logical reason I can come up with.

That makes no sense. If they're under the cap (or even spending on FA's up to the cap) then they obviously are under the luxury tax.

Actually..

There were 2 offers on the table for the #7 pick. Chicago and Boston offered their 2005 1st rounder for it. Since Phoenix thought the Bulls would be the worse team (We only won 23 games the previous year) they took the Chicago deal. Bulls made the playoffs, which was unexpected, and Phoenix probably regretted the deal..

Deng would have been great in the suns system bad bad move
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."

The trade was agreed to the day before the draft and no one had Deng still on the board at #7. That said, either Iggy or Childress might've been there had the draft gone differently anyway.

It was effectively to sign Q-Rich but yeah, horrible move.
