kickball?

is a kickball a turnover? im basically asking for both NBA and pickup basketball.

Yesterday i was playin pickup with a bunch of friends, my team mate passed me the ball and he threw it right at my foot. The other team said kickball! i said alright check it up they said no its our ball. What is the right call? a turnover or no?

As far as I know, a kickball, no matter who kicks it, is just a stoppage in play, a reset of the clock (not the whole 24 seconds though) and the ball out of bounds for the team that had it to begin with.

So in the case you mentioned, I think your friends were right.

So, if there's a second left on the shot clock, and Kobe purposely kicks the ball (granted he has possession), they will reset the shot clock?

I don't think I ever seen a ref call a kicked ball on the team with the ball.

doubt that, im just saying mostly for pickup. I dont understand how it would be a turnover. Ive heard it many times with people calling that but usually i get them to change their mind but i wanted to know if thats right or no.

I'm might be wrong but I don't think you can call Kickball on the offense. Honestly there isnt any advantage to be gain from an offensive player hitting the ball with his shoe. If the ball is kicked either by a defensive player or when neither team has claim to the ball that call would be made.

There is no kickball on offense. When the ball is kicked or dribbled off the players foot is now a loose ball and there for the loose ball rules apply. The clock doesn't reset and possession remains with the original team until controlled by the opposing team.

This however does change if you purposely kick the ball to prevent it from going out of bounds or in an attempt to pass it to a teammate. That is then a turnover.

Not sure how the rules are regarding unintentionally kicked balls on offense. If you intentionally kick the ball, it's obviously a turnover.

Section V-Strike the Ball
a. A player shall not kick the ball or strike it with the fist.
b. Kicking the ball or striking it with any part of the leg is a violation when it is an intentional act. The ball accidentally striking the foot, the leg or fist is not a violation.
PENALTY:
(1) If the violation is by the offense, the ball is awarded to the opposing team at the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer to the base-line than the free throw line extended.
(2) If the violation is by the defense while the ball is in play, the offensive team retains possession of the ball at the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.
(3) If the violation occurs during a throw-in, the opposing team retains possession at the spot of the original throw-in with all privileges, if any, remaining.

i've had numerous arguments about this rules. mostly people who play in my park just assume anytime a ball touch another player below the knees it's kickball. which is stupid, cause it's only kickball when its intentional. i've had a guy dribbled the ball off my foot, while it was stationary to the ground, and he stopped and call kickball.

offensive players can get kicked ball violations too. i've seen it called a couple times. its rare simply because there's no reason for an offensive player to kick the ball....while defensively you can use your feet to prevent post entry passes and bounce passes and whatnot.
however if your teammate just threw it off your foot by accident, and it wasn't an intentional kick or anything....it should just be a loose ball situation, and whoever picks it up first gains possession.

since we're talking about rules...i have a question.
if you're dribbling on the sideline, and you step out for some reason (say a defender's in the way and you're bumped out).....but you don't step out while you're touching the ball....the ball continues to bounce inbounds parallel to you, you avoid the defender and establish yourself back inbounds, and you're the first person to touch the ball.....is that an out of bounds violation?
