A well contested shot and securing the rebound has the same effect. You just need good anticipation on the ball to block or steal. The ball is only going to go up on a shot, and the ball is either going to out there for you to steal when you're stealing the ball. Playing good defense on a guy is different. The guy can pump fake, drive right, drive left or just straight up J in your face.
Well, I'm assuming you are being a bit hyperbolic with the first comment. I think its fair to say that they get overvalued but a the defensive value of a shotblocker is huge and its a lot easier to effectively alter a shot without blocking it if the threat of a block is legitimate.
