The league is a business, not like real leagues that do things by the books. Look at it like bribes. They get more money by keeping certain players in the game like their megastars but try to make it fair by suspending them during the season(Kobe).
"So what about the Spurs?" Yes it would have made a lot of money by having the Suns advance but not nearly as much talk since we are still talking about it a year later since Suns have been ousted twice since.
Stern is a smart business man, he knows how to keep peoples eyes in basketball, their ears to the ground, and more money in the league.

The idea that the NBA losses money from the spurs is wrong. Dudes are looking at the american television ratings like that's the only place the NBA gets money from. It's an international market now, and the Spurs are a global team. When the Spurs win a championship Argentina, France, Virgin Islands and of course San Antonio all celebrate. If the Suns advance and win then pheonix and maybe a bit of Canada would celebrate. Think about it. Spurs make sense business wise in the global market Stern is embracing.
