It's positive and negative reinforcement. You play better when you get rewarded for good plays by the crowd. You also play worse when every time you mess up, the crowd gets on you. The crowd is also an active force, it doesn't wait for you to mess up before getting on you. It practically wills you to fail. I'm sure being at home also helps because of the routine you can maintain vs the random routine you might have on the road, but it's really just a mental edge.

The crowd also affects referees, you get rewarded for making calls for the home team, punished for making bad calls.

The best teams perform no matter what, same with the refs.

2 things:
Role players play better at home because they have more confidence.

And momentum , basketball is a game of runs and who has the momentum , it's a lot easier to create a momentum or stop the other team's run at home.

you nailed it, i think that was the most important factor for the jazz, our role players played soo much better at home than they did on the road and from watching other teams play, its pretty much the same.

role players play like **** on the road, but play like all stars at home, its all about confidence.

but honestly, ive never seen homecourt be such an advantage more than this year.
