Will this be the first time that a team won it all when the year before they lost in the 1st round or didn't even make the playoffs?

I remember seeing something like that a year or two ago.

The Lakers made the playoffs in '81, friend. They got smoked 2-1 in the first round by the Rockets. Magic only played 37 games in the regular season, so they "only" won 54 games, 2nd in the Pacific.

They didn't even miss the playoffs in '79, they got the #1 overall pick (Magic) by pure luck (a coin flip, IIRC). They won 47 games and made it into the second round before they got Magic.

they got the first pick due to free agent compensation, when the new orleans jazz signed gail goodrich. back then you had to compensate a team when you signed their free agents.

77 Blazers and 75 Warriors missed the playoffs the previous season.
