The West was deeper than the East. However, the East had the two best defenses in the NBA, and three of the top 5 defenses. Defenses wins championships, offense wins in the regular season.

In concluding this discussion, by the way the celtics struggled in the east, and didn't have too much trouble with the lakers, who destroyed the west, it does indeed look like the east was underrated and the west was overrated. That is a statement that does not mean the east was better, just not as bad as advertised, and the west was not as good as advertised.

Teams in the East are built for the playoffs. Teams in the West other than the Spurs are built to rack up regular season wins. The West is full of teams who play can offense, but can't stop anyone on defense. All of those 50 win teams with inflated records were pretenders because they don't play defense.

All I can say is Pistons and Cavs would also beat the Lakers and the Manu-less Spurs in a final series.

then why not the hawks? By your logic. The hawks are better than the pistons cause the only thing that seems to count is how a team fares vs the celtics.

The hawks a top 3 team in the NBA?

A WC team will proably win the Championship next season and then all of this "West is overrated" talk will disappear.

Unless it's the Spurs, then we'll just say they are sticking to the pattern

That is funny, but it is true that the Spurs are the team that knows how to play championship ball. They shut down a teams primary scoring option and make them play to something other than their normal strengths. That's how you win a championship. Just ask the Celtics (and for that matter the Spurs last year).
