if I can't make my countries Olympic team then I wouldn't sellout my patrotism and allegiance to play for a different country.

Whats the difference when / if somebody decides to play for the USA when he's not born is the USA ?
Answers : There's no difference .

He wants to play in international Basketball and doesn't see any chance to join the American team so he was looking for another country that could give him an opportunity.

No problem with Tim Duncan playing for us (they are the U.S. Virgin Islands, lives and plays in the U.S.).

Don't even have a problem with Olajuwon playing for us (he moved to the U.S., got his citizenship, lives in the U.S.)

The Kaman thing is a huge issue and has huge implications for the rules (and no, it is not the same as the situation with a lot of the Euro guys in soccer, which I will explain in a second). Kaman A) does not live in Germany and B) does not play in Germany.
If Kaman can just up and leave because he didn't make the U.S. team, couldn't a bunch of guys theoretically get together and create a "Dream Team" for some random country somewhere?

Imagine ... Nash, Nowitski, Garnett, Kobe, and LeBron are sitting there at the All-Star game and they all decide, "Hey let's get Angola citizenship and play for their bball team. We'll make it the new Dream Team." (Not that this would ever happen).

Now with the soccer thing, things are different. If Mauro Camoranesi, for example, was born in Argentina but wants to play for Italy, big deal! His grandparents are Italian, he has his Italian citizenship, and he plays for an Italian club (Juventus).

Most of the other cases you find of Europe-Latin America soccer players not playing for their country of origin have the same type of idea going.

Kaman's great-grandparents were German immigrants, which makes Chris a viable candidate. According to the German Domestic Minister (Wolfgang Schäuble, CDU, a staunch conservative), Kaman was put on the fast track for "outstanding athletic potential" (common for top athletes, e.g. track and fielders Irina Mikitenko, handballer Oleg Velyky or footballer Oliver Neuville) but also convincingly pleaded "to play for Germany and only for Germany" and also supply himself with "permanent German accommodation".

Let's hope that Kaman does not become the 2nd Shawn Bradley, boy, Big Shawn sucked playing for Germany. :P

It's not any worse then the legions of brazilian guys that get "adopted" in soccer .

Kaman has German ancestors otherwise it wouldn't have happened anyway.

Good for him good for Germany . USA didn't want him they shouldn't care.

yes!!! that are great news!!! tuesday me and a bunch of friends talked about the issue of Kaman playing for Germany and I honestly thought it won't be done until Olympics. the first plans occured in february and it took so long and nothing basically happened that I lost my faith. anyway, I'm really happy now. We have one of the best frontcourts of the world aside from USA and maybe Spain and Argentina. if everything clicks and the other players cater to Dirk and now Kaman we have a decent shot at a medal...

There's heaps of soccer players that play for some national team w/o even living or playing in that nation/league therefore it is similar to this situation.

You have no clue - no surprise here - but I've decided to honor your worthless post out of many similar ones with an answer, so:
- Should Spaniards "beat and drag" Gasol once he comes there since he plays in American league and there was American-Spanish war? Should you do the same to NBA players with English citizenship (Amaechi, Deng, Ben Gordon) because of the Independence War? Think about it and I hope you'll get a clue how stupid you sounded.
- What is funny that looking further back, Dirk and Kaman have not only German, but also Polish roots (there was even a talk about Kaman playing for Polish NT, but it's obvious why chose stronger team from richer country (richer=more endorsement opportunities)). I guess if they meet some chauvinists wanting to beat and drag them (though it would have to be like 20 such wannabe thugs: I'd like to see you fighting with Dirk or Kaman one-on-one ;-)), they may play a card that Poland never fought against USA, rather the other way around...

How can you not tell the difference between Gasol playing for the Lakers and Gasol playing for Team USA? If Gasol played for Team USA I'm sure there would be plenty of angry Spaniards. This is ridiculous.

Did anyone even read my post? Kaman has no justification for playing in Germany ... Great-grandparents? Give me a break, 99% of Americans can claim to have a great-grandparent from another country. Under those rules anyone could play for anyone.

BTW, I think about two thirds of all Argentinians have Italian blood. Yet I fail to see a giant exodus of Argentinians wanting to play for Italy in soccer or basketball. The only guy who comes to mind is Camoranesi.

I'm glad us Americans have nothing better to do than bitch at Chris Kaman on an internet forum. I mean, its not like he was going to play for us anyway, but at the very least he could volunteer to dress in drag on the sidelines and be our Olympic team's mascot (I was thinking we could dress him up like Lady Liberty). But now we will just have to settle for a mandatory tattooing of the American flag on his forehead while he is playing for Germany. Under these conditions, it would be acceptable, but otherwise he is a member of the Taliban, Socialist party leader, and communist sympathizer all wrapped in one. I can't believe the Clippers are going to retain his contract next year, how will they ever trust his word again; I thought he was an American, but he is just a German wannabe.
