Worst 5 Rim Protectors In Order: Jokic, Love, Vucevic, KAT, Kanter

Post#1 » by Mister Ze » Mon Apr 9, 2018 2:28 am

Source. Defended field goal percentage within 6 feet and a minimum of 5 attempts/game.

Interesting that Love is the only player on the list whose team has clinched the playoffs. All 5 are on teams in the bottom 10 in DEFRTG

Checked KAT's numbers in his first 2 seasons -
2015-16: 56.1% (13th Highest)
2016-17: 60.5% (8th highest)
2017-18: 61.8% (4th highest)

Surprisingly it's getting worse with each season

I’m almost positive JJ Barea is worse than all of them

I knew KAT wasn't a good defender but didn't realize he was this bad. Both Jokic and KAT are phenomenal offensive players but it'll interesting to see how much they can progress on the defensive end and how much it'll hold them back in their careers. Being able to protect the rim is obviously a huge part of being a center since your typically the biggest guy on the court and stopping otherwise easy buckets can be a multi-point swing.

Do you think because he has been developing his offensive game so well, it is more of a testament to how he spends his development time?

Jokic and KAT need to be paired up with a legit defender like Millsap or Draymond Green who can help cover up for their defensive deficiencies. Although Kanter next to Porzingis seemed to work early this season...

(Kinda OT: Tom Thibodeau and assistant Ron Adams wanted Chicago Bulls FO to draft Draymond 29th and Thibs is now coaching KAT...hmmmmm...)

I know it's only 36 games but Paul Millsap is #1 in this stat (with 5 fga min). Impressive.

He's followed by Porzinigis, Embiid, Poeltl, Favors, and Gobert in that order.

Jakob Poeltl is an underrated defender and a huge reason why the Raptors defense is so good. Literally funnel all shots toward him and those shots are all contested by him. His paint presence really deters most players from attacking the rim frequently. I can't believe people wrote him off as a bust so quickly, even Raptors fans themselves.

Ryan Anderson? You miss out the most obvious one.

A lot of those guys have significant offensive roles on their teams. I think it’s just hard to do both things. At least Kanter and Love are exceptional rebounders.

I’m interested to know where Cousins falls/would fall on this list.

IIRC, he was similarly a defensive stalwart last season. I think his defensive prowess gets understated.

The great big men did both. Kareem, Hakeem, Robinson, Shaq, Duncan, Yao, etc. Jokic and KAT should be held to this defensive standard if they aspire to be historically great players. What I don't see from KAT is the necessary passion on the defensive end.

KATs biggest problem is that his awarnsss on D is just awful, that’s unfortunately something that rarely improves which really sucks because a halfway decent KAT on D would dominate this league

I’d rather have a good defensive rim protecting center than an offensive center that can’t play defense.

From watching him, I always thought Jokic was below average for a center defensively, but I didn't think he was that bad.

It's not a list I made, click on the link in the OP.

It's a measure of the Defended Field Goal Percentage within 6 feet and a minimum of 5 defended attempts. Guys like Ryan Anderson and JJ Barea aren't defending over 5 attempts/game in the paint, only rim protectors are for the most part.

love was never endorsed as a rim protector or his defense in general. putting him on this list is like saying ichiro is one of the top 5 worst home run hitters in baseball.

if the kat thing is correct he SHOULD be on the list and it makes sense to put him there

Ryan Anderson is only at 61.8 on 3.2 shots a game.

He is as bad as Kat, but the Rockets don't let him camp the paint often anyways.
