Congrats to the younger Gasol. Well deserved!

Wow, Duncan got snubbed so hard. Spurs with the 3rd best defense in the league and Duncan has a beastly defensive rating...

Anyway, congrats to Marc. Reasonably deserving, on the basis he's defended well and there's not a single outstanding candidate this year.

I think they got this one right.

I think they would have picked someone else IF:

1) The "Gasol's shoe" play never happened

AND

2) The Grizzlies' defense hadn't looked like a bottom 5 D when Gasol missed those couple of games.

Marc Gasol deserves to win but he is underwhelming. He is by no means an all time great defender.

Both have been good but far from their best years,

Marc Gasol should never be even remotely close to win this award. Terrible decision (not that it matters).

as far as i can tell only second white guy to win(other 2x dpoy mark eaton last did it in 89) and first euro. congrats marcus.

His name is Marc, not Marcus.

Anyone hating on this pick doesn't watch the games. Gasol was the anchor of the game's most effective defense. He makes everyone better, and alters more shots than any player I've seen since Yao was at full strength. He is a terrific pick-and-roll defender and always seems to be in the right place when it matters.

I haven't gotten a chance to really watch the Grizzlies play this year so I can't truly judge.

Congrats though.

Gasol isn't a terrible choice or anything, but it's weird because he isn't even the best defender on his team. Allen has always impressed me more.

his pick and roll defense has been terrible and he doesn't get out to shooters. but he's blocking a lot of shots this year!

and PFs have done well against the heat this year. it is lebron defending the 4 spot. the team's defense has declined this year because of this small ball strategy. not sure why people aren't understanding this

gasol was certainly at least a strong contender for this award

Allen's defensive rating takes a big hit when Gasol comes off the floor, if I recall correctly. The reverse is not true.

Duncan's got countless MVP trophies and rings, I doubt he's sweating about a measly DPOY award.

PS He didn't play enough minutes to win this thing.

Once again, not to take anything away from Marc and the Grizzlies but the truth is that they are NOT the game's most effective defense.

They are the game's 2nd most effective defene:

Memphis has a great defensive efficiency of 0.969 but Indiana is #1 at 0.962

You've busted that nut already.

And has been pointed out already, Memphis is better if you consider they play in the harder, deeper Western conference.
Indy plays the bobcats 4 times,
Memphis plays SA, OKC, DEN, LAC, HOU, UTA, GSW, etc........ 4 times each.

There are far more crappier teams in the East to feed good defense upon.

The west have 5 56+ win teams this year. The east had 1 and only 1 more even crack 50, even a sub .500 team in te playoffs. The west had several teams with a better record that are lottery bound over .500.

Not only that but The east also is home to the 3 worst teams this year before you get to a the west.

A, while your seven one hundredths of a point is better, it comes against more and weaker competition.

Trade conferences for both teams and it wouldn't be close.
In the west, Indy is a 6th seed.
In the east, Mphs is a 2nd seed.
