It's pretty simple...there are plenty of teams out there that want a shot at Durant, and any indication of OKC being cheap and getting rid of players to save their owner from paying the luxury tax is a point in their favor when they meet with him next summer. I mean, just imagine you're Durant and you see Dan Gilbert paying out the ass for a title contender while your own team trades away three players to save some cash just a few years after trading away the guy who just became the runner up in the MVP race over a couple million dollars a year. It's not a good look.

Because there is a repeater tax and OKC didn't want to get into it before Durant/Westbrook sign extensions

This is a massive overpay. Kanter is a major question mark.

Have you missed this free agency period? Its a new era in player salary. I mean Demare Carrol will make as much as James Harden did this year.

Right, but the cap is 70 million this year, whether it's a new era or not, it's remarkable Enes Kanter will be making more than Harden.

he wouldnt if harden was a free agent this offseason

hahahaha. You the only one on Dion island! Watch he turn into 6th man extraordinaire this upcoming season and OKC gonna have decide whether to pay him max money or let him walk. That would be ironic. Losing 2 RFA to offer sheets.

Though I'd venture to guess, most OKC fans on here would welcome it seeing as I'm sure Dion is in for another 37-39% FG shooting year. Sorry to OKC from CLE fandom for hoodwinking you with that false promise.

pretty amazing how we were able to turn him into half of Mozgov, Shump, and JR after all... feels like we robbed OKC & Knicks at same time, Knicks might not be such a big accomplishment to rob but OKC sure is.

No doubt. Mozzy, if anything, was the most important. Though I'd really be interested to know what kind of offers Griff was proposing/and or being offered for Dion from 2014 NBA Draft night up until Opening night based on that "potential" from him ballin out the previous season before he had time to almost ruin all that promise as his play sucked more and more with each passing game as the season wore on.

I heard HIbbert was on the table but in retrospect Mozgod > Hibbert as far as the fit.

OKC probably matches. It's a slight overpay, but young bigs are good bets.

The thing is, this is the first move in a sequence of plays that will eventually result in Durant leaving OKC. He's going to see OKC shed talent to avoid the tax in consecutive years, then he's going to look at the Cavs, and then he's going to pack his bags.

To be honest, I wouldn't hold it against OKC ownership to pass on this and would be unfair to label them "cheap" just because. Overall, it's just a bad deal at this moment.

If OKC didn't have Adams, then maybe, I guess you could make an argument that Enes is a must have but I think the prudent future financial flexibility AND basketball one is too pass, imo.

Doesn't seem like they have much of a choice given that they shipped out Jackson to acquire him. Although I'm pretty sure Portland knew that when they offered the deal. Portland has found themselves with a ton of cap space and no one worth spending it on, so it makes perfect sense to screw over a conference rival you know to be cheap.

Yeah I think they did this just to mess around. They've got like 5 bigs as it is.

If Thunder didn't match you would say they were being cheap and that would cause Durant to leave.

What talent are they going to shed? Steve Novak and Perry Jones? gtfo

Nolan wrote:I don't hate Kanter as much as most people around here do but why is Portland interested in him? Their front court is already pretty crowded.

To show Lillard they aren't going full 100% tank and leaving him all alone.

Because they don't think going 100% tank is desirable or effective anyway

As others pointed out, they have cap room.

They are a lottery team now and must overpay for talent.

None of the centers on their roster are clear keepers.

I think Kanter is in OKC future plans. Matching an offer for an offensive center is a no brainer for them. Kanter likes OKC from what I've read, so we shall see. It all depends on how bad the Thunder want to keep him.
OKC Thunder fan, too.

Kanter is a 20-10 big man that provides the low post presence that OKC has been dying for. They can't afford another James Harden situation where they let talent walk. Just move other players around to get under the tax.

Presti should let him go

I don't value a no-defense Center as much as other people do. I don't care if he is still young. 4 years in the league playing zero defense. Check his numbers paired with Ibaka. Not even Ibaka can make up his defensive flaws. He is pathetic defensively. And while he is decent offensively, he is no Al Jefferson.

Healthy OKC is good enough with WB + Durant and Ibaka/Adams/McGary.

Said that, they will probably match.

I don't even know why POR should pull such an offer. I can only imagine that team with built around Lillard and Kanter. They would make the Nash/Amare duo look good defensively

Rats, I was hoping he'd cancer the Thunder organization, not the Blazers organization.

Oh well, at least that's still twice a year the Jazz fans can pelt him with tomatoes.

Agree

Dude is a massive liability. Utah went from bad to awesome changing Kanter with Gobert.

Kanter is nothing special seriously. OKC will be paying the MAX to a homeless Al Jefferson
