A Pittsburgh-based hospital system faces growing dissension from hundreds of its doctors over its controversial decision to continue routine clinic visits and certain elective surgeries in the face of COVID-19.

More than 300 medical residents, fellows and attending physicians at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) signed an open letter to administrators of the $21 billion nonprofit hospital system and insurer, which owns 40 hospitals and hundreds of clinical locations and outpatient facilities — principally in Pennsylvania, but with outposts in Ireland, Italy and China.

The doctors urged administrators to reverse course and delay “truly non-urgent outpatient appointments and elective surgeries” in light of the continued uncertainty about the prevalence of the coronavirus in their community, the risks to hospital staff and other patients of contracting the virus from undiagnosed carriers, and the need to conserve personal protective equipment and ventilators that are already in short supply.

“While we understand the financial implications inherent in keeping patients at home,” the doctors wrote, “the benefits clearly outweigh these risks in the context of a global pandemic.”

The finance people running the hospital system need to do the right thing and stop elective procedures. This is what happens when healthcare is designed in a for profit system.

This is meant as a non-partisan comment:

As someone who follows politics I will say it's hilarious to see how most Americans have no idea how legislation gets hammered out. "Put politics aside" is a silly nonsensical phrase... negotiating and passing a law is literally the essence of legislative politics.

If you've ever negotiated complex deals in your life you know that the sausage making process can sometimes be ugly. That's just the way it works. There's no magical "consensus bi-partisan solution" for our current situation (or really most situations). The idea that taking a little extra time to get a better package is somehow "failing" is childish and silly (and yes, I'm aware that it needs to only be a little extra time due to how quickly this is unfolding).

Maybe if more people actually paid attention to politics we wouldn't be in as much trouble right now - but that's a discussion for a different forum and a different day.

Canada cases jumping today shortly after US Canada border closure due to Quebec. You can assume most of that is from Florida.

I'm not sure how you're connecting Florida. What's the connection?

I thought maybe it had to do not just with past spread, but the ability to test more and more. It's just a clearer picture of what's been going on for the past few weeks.

We have a influx of people returning from florida who usually spend the winter there.

But is most likely related to our tests starting to come back. We are still like 5+ days behind in Ontario.

We have so many people that come from around the world to Florida, I think the only reason we don't have more cases is because we are not doing enough testing.

I was thinking at first that the CDC would suggest tighter restrictions after this 15 days are up. Now I think they may be considering opening things up to save the economy.

IIRC that's sort of what Italy did and why it turned into such a disaster.

That's literally the worst thing you can do.... it's like throwing away all your progress and starting over again.

It would be one thing if we had a mass test/trace/quarantine system in place in 15 days... but we won't. Testing is still terrible most places outside of NY

Im sure they are getting pressure from corporations but its nothing but minuscule if any short term gain and a more long term loss.

Lot of people from Quebec live in Florida during the winter months. Arizona is also popular now.

This video does a good job of explaining why we should not allow business to open back after the 2 weeks, as it relates to the economy.

Is the US government not looking at the countries who are in deep and those who have managed it well? It's almost like they are omitting all the data and just taking it day by day. Could have been minimized the moment it became a problem in January, here we are almost April and we are simply reacting.
