from wikipedia

During a game on December 9, 1977, Tomjanovich was punched by Kermit Washington of the Los Angeles Lakers. The blow shattered Tomjanovich's face and inflicted life-threatening head and spinal injuries, leaving him sidelined for five months. He eventually made a full recovery and was selected for the NBA All-Star Game the following 1978–79 season. The incident and its aftermath are recounted in the John Feinstein book The Punch: One Night, Two Lives, and the Fight That Changed Basketball Forever, as well as in Tomjanovich's 1997 autobiography A Rocket at Heart: My Life and My Team.

Leave fighting to the professionals. I see enough players get hurt with violence basically erradicated from the sport.

They are all millennials ad gen z after all. The vast majority were all taught not to fight growing up, not to bully, schools stopPed tolerating fights etc., and I wonder if most have probably never fought. People are just raised very differently you ask me.

Not sure the one game suspension is any different than it ever was. But I can say I have not seen a punch actually landed by an nba player in years unless it was a sucker punch.

Look at the reactions these days, look at the three below.... it’s not even considered. It’s a huge difference. And it was a cultural change.

Same reason why there’s less poster dunks and crossovers. Social media. People know every thing will be on the internet forever, and their reputation will be tarnished. So they are a lot more careful.

So the Sixers were up 2-0 against Walton’s Blazers, winning both games away. Game 3 back in Philly, and Darryl Dawkins gets upset by some of the physical play, and he tries to get into a fight, getting into a fighters stance, rocking back and forth, and trying to encourage his team mates to join him. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, having already spent too much time on Planet Lovetron. He’s so into his act that when Doug Collins, HIS TEAMMATE, comes over to calm him down, Daryl clobbers HIM in the head. Not sure what that did to Doug for the rest of the series. Maurice Lucas, who probably was Dawkins main irritant, comes over to further humiliate the immature center. The Blazers tighten up. The Sixers were never the same, and lost 4 games in a row.

Because players care more about $$$ than winning games. That’s why players now sit out games to “rest”. MJ would have never sat out a game for “rest”.

he might have been too emotional and immature at that stage, but Chocolate Thunder was not an idiot.
I read several very interesting quotes from him over the years, showing a wide perspective on things that former players usually don't have.

With today’s generation where technology has made it too easy for anyone to work hard for it. Not that I am saying we are a lazy generation, but simply put, we will get out worked by the previous generation. These players makes so much money that even the worst of the bunch makes as much as an all star type player in 1980s. College players are now one and done deal. They will be guaranteed to make millions during their rookie year. The previous generation did not have this kind of luxury compare to ours. Smart phones, technology has made our generation very soft.

The best way to show how much you care about winning a game is to fight someone and get ejected/suspended from the game and thus have no ability to impact the outcome lol...

They don't fight because all the players are friends.

The lack of fights in the NBA is a good thing, if I want to watch fighting, I'd watch professional boxing or MMA, not amateurs. The fake fights that happen in NBA and most other non-combat sports are a pathetic spectacle, players act all outraged and mad yet are easily held back by their teammates after swinging a weak punch a feet away from the target.

I'm implying, for people too young to know different like yourself, prior to your age it was completely tolerated and not discouraged. It was a different culture.

Other than that.... what the actual ****, no, I didn't say bullying and fighting should be encouraged but what a wonderful invention of what I wrote.

You used it as justification for the people in here asking for more fighting in sports. Who cares if it was more tolerable 30 years ago? Why would you yearn to go back to that culture?

The culture was different. That is three times I've said it, hopefully the dime drops this time.

I used it as the logical reason why people fight less all around, not justification for more fighting. And it IS the reason.

Yearn to go back? Again... what a wonderful invention of what I wrote. If you find it offensive that your generation was raised with less fighting and bullying for some wierd reason, too bad. It's a fact.

Its more of a paradigm shift IMO. In the 80s and 90s players held much more loyalty to their teammates and teams. The opposing team was the "enemy". Gradually, through the 00s the mentality shifted and the players don't give an eff about their team and now view ownership as the "enemy". It all about protecting their individual "brand". Same reason they all hug and shake hands after getting blownout. Theres no real pride anymore.

Game should be more physical. The flopping and general bitchassness of the current generation of player is boring.

Might be stupid, but it would absolutely get huge ratings. You're lyin if you're telling me you wouldn't watch a fight highlight between Durant & Westbrook.

dude, have you seen NBA players fight? There's a reason there has been maybe 3 punches landed in the past 40 years. These guys are good at basketball, but they suck at fighting.

Now if you want to have a PPV where James Johnson squares off in a MMA cage with both Morris twins at the same time I'd be all over that.
