Best defender on the best defensive in the NBA. Plus a lot of the stuff he does doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. He’s a guard, but his ability to defend any position is what makes the Celtics’ switch everything defense work. Celtics turnaround 1/3 of the way through the season was largely due to him coming back and our defense coming together as a juggernaut.

I'm not a C's fan, I'm sure several on here aren't. I just appreciate players like him. I'd be happy for any of the finalists winning.

This has never been the way the award's been given out though? The "best on best" criteria is more of an MVP voting thing. To me it just seems like everybody got tired of voting for Gobert and it's popular to hate on him.. so let's give it to the guy who embodies hard work and toughness the most. Defensive impact was only a secondary consideration.

Never change GB.

Talk about a changing of the guard... Lol, I'll see myself out.

This is a bad take, the guys been first team multiple years. Its not like he hasnt been one of the best defenders for years now.

How is it a bad take? Tatum is unquestionably a better defender THIS season. DPOY is not a career award. A guy winning DPOY for the entire league when there's better defenders on his own team is all time awful.

Defense isn’t just about how good you’ve been one on one. Smart is the defensive floor general. He’s the one who motivates others to be better. He’s the one calling out plays, directing traffic, making the hustle plays, etc.

I think it’s nice that there’s an argument for others to be made, especially bridges. But let’s not pretend smart doesn’t have a case to be made.

And by the way, can we just acknowledge how loaded Boston is defensively? Smart, Brown, Tatum, Williams, Horford. Holy **** what a team Boston has.

nobody is afraid of going at Marcus Smart lol
Bam/Gobert/Bridges are all more deserving than him, but voter fatigue and Celtics media bias wins out

Congrats! You pointed out a grammatical error! Doesn't take away from the absurdity of your post, but hey, take what victory you can!

P.S. - That was really "turrible" of me to make such a mistake!

Congratulations to Marcus Smart and the Celtics. I’ve always been a big fan and it’s to see him get this award.

- Draymond missed too many games
- Smart had more steals per game than any of them, in addition to Bridges
- According to matchup data, Smart allowed fewer points per possession over the season than Bridges, Gobert or Giannis
- Smart had more deflections per game than any of them
- Smart recovered more loose balls per game than any of them
- Smart drew more charges per game than any of them

I am not saying there aren't arguments for Gobert, Bridges and Giannis, but there is certainly a good argument for Smart as well. If a guard was going to win it again, Smart was a good candidate for it.

Funny how you didn't mention Bam who eclipses smart on all the analytics for defensive metrics.

Kings had the money at the end of FA to get him.

Why Vlade?

Cool, I hope every player keeps that energy. Will make it even easier to get missed shots and turnovers.

He's a very good defender.

I hope this encourages him to flop less but why would it? He may be more emboldened.

Bad selection, IMO. He's a very good defender, but DPOY? Nah. Rewarding a Celtic is fair enough but should be Tatum then.
