Because the NBA has not given a definition of MVP, so for all we know it might be "who do you think has the best chances of winning in the playoffs after you vote".

No definition = you can't blame anyone for creating their own.

So you think Shaq and/or Kobe could have taken a team with Will Barton and Aaron Gordon as their next best options to the 2nd round?

I think MVP Shaq could very easily take Aaron Gordon and Will Barton to the second round, yes

Very easily is a bit of a stretch. Shaq always more or less needed reliable SG/PG's to feed him the ball and also shooters that he could kick it out when he was doubled. Jokic on the other hand is the exact opposite. He actually needs competent people that he can pass the ball to when he is creating offense.

I'm not trying to argue who is a better player obviously but i'm not sure Shaq could have just easily carried this team to the 2nd round. Specially because you can't use elbows anymore like in the past.

And we'll never know because prime Shaq never went into a postseason without a starry roster. The closest possible example we have is 2nd year Shaq (far from his prime but already putting up prime Shaq numbers). Rookie Penny wasn't quite a star yet. That 4 seed Magic team got swept by the 5 seed Pacers (Reggie Miller and Rik Smits). Shaq had a bad series against the Pacers jumbo front line (the Davis bros and Smits), but it was also his first time in the playoffs. We never see Shaq on a mediocre roster again (and it's a stretch to call that Magic team mediocre) so we don't know what Shaq might have done in the playoffs with Will Barton/Aaron Gordon level running mates.

People just tend to ignore that some star players have better roster luck than others. Guys like Shaq, Magic, Larry play their whole careers on juggernauts with star teammates. Guys like Lebron and MJ we saw on a bad team only at the beginning of their careers, and then the rest of their careers are played with very ideal conditions. Guys like Kobe, Dirk, Wilt, Hakeem, Wade... we got to see in different contexts. And then every now and then you get a guy like KG, Dame, Iverson who spend most of their careers on competitive rosters.

Anyone who thinks individual players can drag or carry a bad roster to victory against a better team in the playoffs is just ignoring the actual details of NBA basketball history. It basically never happens. If you get lucky and get a weak playoff opponent (like everyone who played in the East from 2000-2016!!) a 1-star roster is sometimes enough (especially if that roster has good defense). But no 1-star was beating the Warriors in the first round this year. Not Embiid, not Giannis, not Michael Jordan or Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain. Basketball is just more of a team sport that some fans like to admit.

Anyways, I wish all the good health in the world on the Nuggets so that we get another deep playoff run and all the silly fans can feel silly about their silly little takes.

Against the Warriors who are by far title favorites right now? So, Shaq wins it all this year with the Nuggets roster then?

the hate against jokic is ridiculous. don't know how any basketball fan can watch him play and not enjoy what he's doing. sure you may think giannis/embiid or whoever should win, but there's no doubt jokic is deserving as well.

Players, coaches, GM's, etc. having an input on these awards makes sense to me.

All good (for me).

Congrats to Nikola.

Hell of a season, and (short) postseason. Hes really **** good at basketball.

I hope he enjoys it with his family and friends like he said he would.

Media members are the best at voting at these awards

Agree to disagree.

Definitely deserved. Congrats to Jokic and props to the voters.

Embiid is not real MVP  Joker beat him in almost every category. Learn to read the stats before posting.

He was probably talking about Harden given how Harden put the entire squad on his back last night.

Must be such a luxury to not have to score a FG in 20 mins and your team can still score enough to win

I don’t think Embiid touched then ball more than twice in the front court in the last 5 mins of the game, and Butler was having his way with him in the post. Thankfully vintage Harden carried them to the dub.

Oh well, Jokic just needs his own Middleton and Jrue and maybe he can start winning championships too.

Congrats to the true MVP

You could have just quoted the one Bucks fan who didn't congratulate him instead of this weird shoehorn to do your Giannis hate thing.

Honestly, look at these terrible postseason numbers.

If you're going to have twice as many MVPs as Shaq or Kobe I'm gonna hold you to a pretty high standard. Stats aren't enough. Great regular season player

Utter silliness and a lazy, boring take.
Last time Jokic was on a healthy squad he humiliated a stacked team led by Kawhi Leonard and went to the Western Conference Finals.

Fans like you called Kobe a loser when he was on a garbage squad in between Shaq and Gasol. Was Kobe elite, and then bad, and then elite again? Or was he just always elite and the team changed around him? Shaq didn't win multiple MVPs because he too often chilled in the regular season. Kobe came close to winning multiple but there were just other great players. Neither Shaq or Kobe ever put up a regular-season performance like this. You need a squad to beat good teams in the playoffs (ask Michael Jordan about how his playoffs went pre-Pippen and Grant). Jokic's squad sat this season out with injuries. God permitting they'll be back healthy next year and Denver will be a playoff threat.

Preach!!! For years it would bother me to no end that Tracy McGrady would get pined down for playoff losses when he brought teams to the playoffs that had no right to be there. Hopefully, a Jokic MVP shows that the playoffs is about the team, not about the individual.

I'm looking forward to next season. The Nuggets will finally be on an even playing field with the rest of the league when Murray and MPJ come back.

I mean, you can look at it this way or that way. Past Teams led by Aaron Gordon were bottomfeeders. You add Jokic and he gets that Team a solid record.

Still not sure I consider them contenders, even with those guys back. It’ll def make them more formidable obviously, as Murray and MPJ will take the scoring pressure off Jokic, but they need defenders in a bad way and neither of those guys provide that. Will be interesting to see what they do this off-season in that regard. And that’s assuming that MPJ can actually stay healthy.

wouldn't say impossible but close to it lol. Embiid and Luka would be my front runners next year....Giannis will always be in the mix too.

Lol salty Philadelphia beat-writer.
He is right. Jokic has anger management issues and can't be on the floor during key defensive plays, but hey advanced stats say he's an elite defender.

I'm guessing that you don't really understand the meaning of the award.

It's given to the Most Valuable Player in the REGULAR season. 1st round exits have nothing to do with it.
Was there a player that did more with less this season than Jokic? 48 wins with Gordon as their 2nd best player. Maybe Embiid? Giannis had a better supporting cast than those guys.
