Darvin Ham might be the most Athletic Former NBA player that have ever coach an NBA team.
https://youtu.be/pz-BSup2I-c
great coaches like Pops, Spoelstra, JVG etc have actually didn't even play in the NBA as far as I know.
Phil, Riley were role players, add Ime Ukoka, Kerr is more of a specialist/shooter.
Magic tried but failed. Bird was un-athletic and also heavily relied on another ex role player Rick Carlisle to run the Pacers before.
Drexler bombed his stint Coaching Houston U, with under 33% record, lasted 2 years. I can't help but wonder why athletic guys like TMac, Carter, MJ, Worthy, Dominique Wilkins etc etc etc never tried coaching. Were they smart enough to teach, strategize etc?
Hopefully, as a Lakers fan, Darvin would be the exception.

Ty Lue was athletic. Bill Russell was athletic. Lenny Wilkens was athletic. They won titles as coaches.

They’re only a few years removed for hiring Luke, a fresh talent at the time.

Everyone seems to have so much knowledge about Ham’s enormous strengths and yet I can’t find any articles about him designing smart schemes for his past teams. They said he was a good player development coach when he worked here in LA. Not much developing is needed for this team IMO.
So please, for anyone who seems to be sure that he’s great, Please share and indulge us.

Lue was fast….and? But ok. Russell coached a very loaded team just like Tomjanovic and Westhead…
Wilkens was athletic? And still he is an ok coach from 40 years ago, but not great Imo, if he is, fine, who else?

The Buss family like to hire within the Lakers family so to speak. Pat Riley, then Randy Pfund, Kurt Rambis, Luke Walton etc were all ex Lakers players or assistants who became the head coach. Ex Lakers players West and Kupchak were the Lakers gm prior to Pelinka. I think Jeannie will prioritize Kerr before Lue because he has the stench of Clippers curse on him but she would still hire him if Kerr declines.

Wait, How did Kerr have connections with the Lakers again? Was he a love child Jerry Buss or Phil?

Good for him. Although he may be stepping in it, considering what all he has to work with. Mike Brown had a 4 year contract. Then he found that coaching the uncoachable was doing him no favors. He was quickly scapegoated and ran out of town. The championship core is gone, save for Lebron and 'DNP' Davis. You basically have a new coach having to corral a really green team, again. Only this time instead of Kobe, Pau, and Nash, there's Lebron, Davis, and Russ.

JayMKE wrote:Presuming Ham runs similar system to Budenholzer(who he has been with since Bud left San Antonio) I think its a good hire who should raise them floor of the team, he's grinded for over 10 years to get this opportunity.

Taylor Jenkins was also with Bud in San Antonio, then under Bud in Atlanta and Milwaukee.
Did Jenkins run Memphis same as the Bucks? No. Different team, different needs.

Bud did the best for what he had to work with, Jenkins did the same, and Ham will do the same.

He gets to coach three hall of famers in sunny southern California. That's a great job.

Will LeBron allow himself to be coached by Ham? Or will he take 30 games off because he deserves a spring vacation every March?

They had a chance at Lue and didn't listen to Lebron

Not just that but LeBron freaking James. Now he's going to be hanging with the one and only King James every day. He's probably excited about that on its own. He's at the club, gets a text, honey asks him who it is, oh it's just LeBron James. Cool factor there is like getting a text from Barack Obama. Major opportunity there for Ham to befriend an icon.

He's a former NBA player that's tall, they already know him...

This is indeed interesting.

For pure highflying chops Ham is the best by far…for overall athleticism we have Bill Russell, Artis Gilmore and Elgin Baylor up there as well. Cant recall other.

Like a pig to slaughter.

I don't think Ham can save that franchise

+1 for the ham/pig reference... but our franchise doesn't need saving, thank you very much!

Lebron and AD need saving, from this situation they have put us in.
