I feel like a deal like this has to be done with the idea that the Knicks give him another big one after its up if he's even 70% of the player he is now in 5-6 years.

Few Things here

1. Leon Rose is Brunson godfather there is no shot for a Morey/Harden situation. Its much easier to give the team a "deal" when its legit family operation going on plus you get to play with 3 of your college best friends.

2. Jalen watched his dad bust his ass every summer to stay in the NBA on minimum contracts. This is a main reason why he kept stating he wants security and why he was willing to take only 55 million over 4 from the Mavericks

3. Over the next five years once he opts out of the 3rd year and gets the 10 year max its 269 million vs 263 million at the end of the 2030 season. I dont think his pockets will be hurting. And if he does get hurt taking this extension will look smart on his part. Hes just betting on himself while taking the guranteed money

Shows you how much money Jalen is clearly making off the court as a star in New York (and well deserved). That's the only reason he can do something like this without blinking. Good for him and the Knicks. Hang the banner.

Would think this kind of move only makes him more beloved and thus even more marketable. Won’t totally make up for the lost salary, but softens the blow in that market.

Plus…happiness. Getting to do his job and compete at the highest level with basically all his best friends. Money isn’t everything for everyone…and it’s not like he’s going to the poorhouse.

There are literally like a dozen former Knicks on the payroll either in the front office or as team ambassadors. Dolan takes cares of people if they are loyal to him (even well into retirement).

A guy like Brunson seems like he has his head screwed on with a great support system around him. As Woj said, he’ll recoup majority of this on his next contract anyway.
