Also he did a buyout with the Nets. The Clippers are paying him minimum. There wasn't a better player available for minimum who can rebound, defend, improve pace and put up 7 assists per game in 25 mpg.

He also accepted a buyout and is no longer on a max contract

Ben has had interesting issues. But much of that was because he was paid big salary and expected to return to star form. That's much different than expecting him to be better than Kevin Porter JR was (who is arguably the worst player in the NBA this year) off the bench in 20 minutes a game or something. It's relative to his role and who he's replacing.
