The Nets on Friday continued to try to put the finishing touches on a trade for Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony.

Sources who were extremely optimistic Thursday the deal would be completed shortly were even moreso Friday, with one saying chances of the trade have increased from 90 percent to 95 percent.

The deal could be agreed to principle before Tuesday, then finalized later next week.

If completed, Anthony is expected to meet with Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov on Tuesday or Wednesday. The billionaire is scheduled to attend the Nets' Wednesday home game against the Jazz, which is Russian Culture Night at Prudential Center.

One person directly involved in the trade scenario suggested that if all goes as planned and the deal is finalized, Anthony could play his first game for the Nets next Friday against the Pistons, the other party involved in the proposed three-team, 14-player deal.

It is believed the Nuggets would like to include one more player in the deal to help with their salary situation, but it would be Renaldo Balkman, not Al Harrington. It is unknown if the Nets would add another player to the deal

Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups and Pistons forward Richard Hamilton would join Anthony in New Jersey. Up to eight Nets are believed to be heading out if the current proposal is consummated.

Anthony would have to agree to a contract extension, but the Nets have believed all along that he would do so.

Could this be the deal?

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4z7sqsh
+
Denver – ’11 NJ #1 + ’12 GS #1 + $3m Cash + $13.5m TPE
Detroit – NJ #2

NETS
Chauncey Billups / Jordan Farmar / Anthony Carter
Richard Hamilton / Sasha Vujacic
Carmelo Anthony / Renaldo Balkman / Dejuan Summers
Kris Humphries / Travis Outlaw
Brook Lopez / Sheldon Williams / Melvin Ely

If so Denver just pillaged NJ and got the single best return in trade in the NBA.

Because Leon Rose is Rip's agent, and Rip wants out of Detroit. Only way he can do that is to package him with Melo.

Guess NJ decided to take on Renaldo Balkman.

Damien James for Renaldo Balkman works

If they can get rid of Balkman as well, then hell, I have a new-found respect for the Denver front office. And I hope Melo is going to enjoy missing the playoffs.

Maybe it's to late this season but next season in a weak east I don't think he'll have a problem making it to the playoffs.. just a first round exit

The 8th place team the Bobcats are on pace for about 33/34 wins.

Really, getting rid of Balkman's $1.5m dollar deal or whatever it is giving you a new found respect for them?
I would say pillaging another team and getting the best return ever with or without Balkman does it for me... like I already pointed out.

Charlotte's only on pace for 33/34 wins and they are in 8th. 7th place isn't that much better.
Nets are 10-28. Going 23-21 could conceivably get them there.

I just don't get it.

Afflalo > Morrow
Billups > Harris
Karl > Johnson
Denver bench > Nets bench

What is Melo thinking about? I don't get it too. He would be paired with Kris Humpries, Jordan Farmar, Travis Outlaw and Brook Lopez

That's cause its not about winning. Its about being home back on the east coast, if it was about winning it would be orlando, and chicago.

Den with Melo wont win a championship, so why not go home? Denver isnt a legit contented they cant win on the road at all.

Hard to imagine Charlotte trading Wallace in a straight salary dump, which is what Murphy's expiring contract basically is. Rip is probably the best player you're going to get in that kind of situation, unless they want to throw a couple more of those first round picks at somebody.

Anthony speaks with ESPN on Friday about playing in New York area

Finally what seem to be some straight forward, honest comments from Carmelo(well, as honest as you're going to get).

Anthony stopped short of saying he wanted to play for the New York Knicks or the New Jersey Nets, who will move into a new arena in Brooklyn in 2012.

"I don't know, it's tough for me to answer that question," Anthony said when asked where he wants to play next year. "It's tough for me to sit here and say, 'Oh, I want to play in New York' [or] 'Oh, I want to play in New Jersey' [or] 'Oh, I want to say here [in Denver].' "

Anthony said he was surprised when the Nets emerged as possible trade partners with the Nuggets.

"I [had] never really thought about the New Jersey Nets," he said, before allowing that he has susbsequently considered the possibility.

"I see what the future holds, they'll move into Brooklyn. ... Me going back home to Brooklyn, opening that arena, I think about all that stuff."

But Anthony also said, "I haven't even thought about [signing an extention with the Nets]."

Anthony thinks he'll be traded before the deadline if he doesn't sign the extension with the Nuggets.

Anthony said he is concerned about the expiring collective bargaining agreement and the effect it could have on his financial stability.

He said the new CBA is "the most important thing right now" as he weighs his future options. He would risk losing millions of dollars by entering free agency under a new agreement, which is likely to have a lower ceiling for player salaries.

if melo's considering jersey/brooklyn....it won't be hard for prokhorov to make the sale.

seems like it's just a logistical scheduling thing at this point, and denver probably trying to come up with a way to get out of a little more salary. woj & david aldridge seem to think the same thing.

denver with a b2b coming up this weekend. new jersey with an early game on monday. league office closed on monday.

without something unknown coming into play or melo basically changing his mind on jersey, i expect a deal to be reached 'in principle' on monday afternoon. submit the papers on tuesday, get some physicals done. potentially guys are playing for new teams on wednesday, or friday at the latest.

Gotta love how very telling quotes were left out... :D

Carmelo Anthony's "ultimate dream" would be to play in New York, the Denver Nuggets forward said Friday in an interview with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez.

Anthony refused to say he would sign an extension with another team, saying "I have to weigh everything, all the options."

Interesting...just because he's traded, let's sa

And the most important quote of them all...

Ultimately, Anthony said playing for a winner is more important than money.

"That gold ball is what everybody wants," he said of the NBA Finals championship trophy.

Melo talking about "the new CBA is the most important thing right now" is pretty telling if you ask me and pretty much solidifies what many of us have been saying, that in the end, it's always about the money. If that's how he truly feels and if that's the mindset he currently has, I definitely see him accepting a trade to the Nets. Denver is obviously leaning towards doing a deal with New Jersey over New York as apparently Prokhorov is stupid enough to outbid himself for Melo. I have to say, as much as the guaranteed money under the current CBA is some motivation for Carmelo to sign with the team Denver would prefer he go to, I'd be a bit wary about the seemingly stupid ownership I was walking into if I were him. Mikhail comes off as a complete F'in idiot with the way he's been handled by Denver with regards to these Anthony trade shenanigans. Walsh is at least smart enough to realize that Denver isn't holding all the cards. Prokhorov on the other hand is so preoccupied with obtaining Carmelo that he doesn't even recognized he's getting robbed by the Nuggets when Denver has practically zero leverage given Melo's extension situation. Can't wait to see Anthony demanding a trade out of New Jersey in 4-5 years after Mikhail has overpaid to retain Rip and continues to put over the hill crap players around Carmelo.

Lol I know...but when you think of NY, you think of the Knicks, not the to be Brooklyn Nets. It's like saying the New York Giants/Jets vs the Buffalo Bills...nobody considers the Bills a "NY" team (which is ironic because they are the only NY football team that actually plays in NY :D ).

He also said that...winner>money.

denver has the same record as the knicks and has been much better for years, if winning was THAT important he'd be open to the nuggets making some moves to improve them, but that hasn't seemed to be an option.

i'm sure he wants to win, but i think going to new york's market is his real priority. im guessing he has to decide if new jersey and then brooklyn is close enough.
