Re-creation of the flight (it's not graphic or anything like that but only going to post the link in case anybody is still sensitive to what happened):

https://youtu.be/XSHpbGhy3Ko

I would assume the pilot was trying to get underneath cloud cover but does anybody know why he would descend so rapidly?

I dont know if this is the right thing to say. But I dont like seeing people say RIP kobe, or RIP Gianna. I know the intent behind it is good, and nothing but the best is meant. But its hollow. There's nobody that needs to rest less than a 13 year old. With a bright future ahead of her. And there's nobody that wants to rest less than Kobe Bryant, who barely even made time to sleep while he was alive. There's no peacefulness in their passing, and there's no resting. The only positive thing about this, is that if Gianna Bryant had to die, she had a parent with her to guide her into the afterlife and didn't have to go there alone. But RIP makes it sound to me like there's a possibility either of them could be resting or peaceful, and I just don't believe that's true. I know its just a saying, and maybe not meant literally. Its just been bothering me. But everything has been bothering me lately, so i'm aware this could just be nothing.

Reportedly both Kobe and Gianna were at Catholic mass Sunday morning.

Kobe reportedly was a devout Catholic.

Look up what the Bible/Christianity/Catholicism say about the afterlife.

According to that paradigm, life goes on and they are certainly at PEACE meaning they have no more worry, no more pain, etc.

They are free from the pain, suffering, and turmoil of this world.

But I do believe they live on and continue to do things. Rest is just a figure of speech.

"Requiescat in pace" and similar phrases of the same meaning are now conventions, but they were even found in the catacombs of the 3rd centuries . It's simply part of the western tradition. You can't simply say:...."it's hollow". It has meaning for the people who pray. It's not a matter of Kobe needing an extra help (!) for the afterlife championship (even though some people believe in something beyond).
It's not as void and naive as you make it out to be. The psychological effect is always present.

Honestly I'm not an assiduous participant of Masses, but I like to join people with prayers and conventions because it makes everybody feel united.

I am worried that they have not found the bodies. Ugh - the depression is sinking in. I think I'm starting to hit stage three of the seven stages

What are you talking about? They have found and identified all of them.

I dont believe they have no worry or pain. Nor do I believe they are at peace. Not with what was left behind. It being nice to think so isnt good enough.

I think some people are. But for the most part it sounds like something thats just said. If the bible insists they are at peace, its something i’ll have to consider. But my personal feelings were of the opposite. Perhaps this is one of those things that simply requires blind faith. And I have to have it.

You’re absolutely right. If it has meaning for those who say it, arguably thats the point. Its a saying thats just as much for the health of the bestower as the receiver. I understand that sounding hollow to me does not in fact make it hollow in principle. Whatever makes people feel better is of at least some substance.

Im just confused, frustrated, and looking for answers people have looked for for thousands of years but are impossible to find. And its manifested like this today.

One striking thing...perhaps it's been the pictures selected, but every photo shown of the family together, Gianna is next to Kobe. Incredible.

Saw Gianna cheering when Kobe hit the shot to take the lead in his final game. Incredibly sweet. Incredibly heartbreaking.

As heartbreaking as this tragedy is, they no longer exist. We grieve and have fond memories. Their impact on the world remains. But as far as their being, it's gone. It's like the period of time before they were born. We have a life span - with a beginning and an end.

According to David Kessler, co-author of "On Grief and Grieving," sadness over the death of a public figure is often so strong because it is permitted.

"Collectively, right now, men have permission to cry — or be visibly moved," he said, per Elemental. "Can we normally talk about our grief with strangers in a Starbucks or a bookstore? No. But we can now."
Kessler also suggests that celebrities connect us to our own life. Yes, we mourn Kobe, but perhaps we also mourn the loss of our own youthful, carefree days spent watching him hoop.
Why it matters: There's something profound about collective grief. When someone who knew Kobe speaks, it reverberates, because we felt like we knew him, too.

The bottom line: Reach out more. Be more emotionally intimate. Say those things you've always wanted to say.

I took the last five days off this board and away from social media as much as possible. The pain still lingers and I reckon that'll stay with me forever to some extent. My wife and I had got into discussions about Kobe last night and I started reminiscing about my childhood. To this day I still vividly remember shooting hoops in my backyard commentating and imitating Kobe. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Kobe at the buzzer....Rinse and repeat. It's crazy man, all of it. I'm slowing coming to peace with the whole tragedy, but I'm scared of what emotions tonight's game will evoke. That and his funeral/memorial will definitely be an emotional hurdle.

I took him for granted... that last game he played, I cared and I enjoyed it but I was like meh, it was time for him to retire... I told myself at least we'll see him from time to time on the sidelines... I was excited about the new superstars in this league...Now I realize we lost a gem...the founder of modern era basketball...he suddenly disappeared and left a lasting mark to the entire world.
