Too rich for my blood. Much as I don’t like to doubt Pop, Spurs would need to nearly double their win total and improve by 20 wins to make the play in (based on last years #10 seed), and even though they were blatantly tanking parts of last year, the roster is pretty rough. At least in terms of winning now. Got a few solid younger guys but they also traded away Poeltl and might lose a few other vets. I think it’ll be an interesting and fun team but probably gotta bet against them getting to .500 this season. Unless the ‘decent player’ they add is more like a top 50 guy.

He's going to have a bigger impact than Mobley did as a rookie, and that was a special season from Evan. The floor for this guy is basically DPOY right out of the gate.

Am I missing something?

Soon to be top 3 offensive player in the NBA?

All star as a rookie?

DPOY as a rookie, is his FLOOR? He's just another hyped prospect until he's not. But this stuff seems a bit of a stretched

Making the all-star team as a rookie, while rare, is not unheard of (if Blake Griffin can do, I think Wemby could). DPOY as a rookie being the floor is a bit of a stretch but it's really easy to see he's going to be a defensive monster from day one. Top 3 offensive player in the league is the one I think is a bit much.

The hype for him is ridiculous and it seems to be that way from everyone except Spurs fans.

I don't care how we do this season, as long as he grows and develops accordingly, build a nice roster around him and grow for the future. Personally, Luka was a Euroleague MVP, Final 4 MVP and all the accolades going into the draft, whereas Victor has yet (i believe) to even play in the Euroleague. Lets hold our horses

I wouldn't bother with the horses my friend, let them run wild :D

This is just my personal estimate but having watched the Euroleague champion this year (Real Madrid), I feel they would kill to have someone like Wemby on the roster and they would probably start him. Maybe not from day 1 but definitely towards the end including the Euroleague Final 4, because the guy developed rapidly throughout the course of the season. And having watched Wemby in a series against Monaco who were one of those Final 4 teams (and also the French League finalist and winner against Wemby's team) he did put up big numbers against them. So yeah this is just my gut feel and obviously a logical leap, but I do think that if he played for Real Madrid like Luka did it's not unhinkable that he might have ended up with an MVP. He is definitely in the Luka tier, ie a once in a decade type talent. He just chose to play for a smaller upcoming team because he wanted the freedom to develop his game on the floor the way he and his group felt best, and it was a very succesful and wise choice in the end.

Injury is the only thing you should fear (knock on wood), but his group seems to be very aware and doing the best possible to help him prevent it long term. And the Spurs are the type of team to do the same.

Quite normal expectations considering his impact is going to be similar to be that of LeBron's rookie season.

Do we still need this thread to be stickied? We've heard everything about this guy and there is zero doubt where he's going. I want my scroll space back!

DM me. I’ll make bets that Victor ends up a bust and not a top 2 rookie from this draft

I accept venmo, zelle, etc

It's like that because we got to experience 2 all-time great 7fters in David Robinson and Tim Duncan. It's like we have been there before that's why we are very calm and collected when it comes to expectations of Victor. For me the excitement is subdued to some extent I guess because Victor is a mystery while those 2 other guys weren't and it's just a wait and see type of deal. Also, it's because I enjoyed the Duncan era so much that I don't know if anything will ever top it and that kind of seeps into the way I view Victor.

I don't think he is comprable to Luka other than the fact they were both hyped before drafted.
Luka was drafted as a proven winner, refined player, who was able to compete at the highest level.
Wemby is a player who chose not play at the highest level, so all you have is assumptions.

I'm personally not sure about his decision not to keep playing at the Euroleague (in the previous year he played he was non-factor). I cannot deny the possibility that he just doesn't have the mental ability that true great athletes have.

I hope I am wrong...

On offense I can see some potential to make an impact like Lebron though really, he's not the strongest shooter for his size and weak from 3 on a high volume; and then on defense? C'mon, LBJ was a tank coming in, 6'8" and 250lbs of solid muscle. Wembys 230 and 7'4"ish (that would be akin to Lebron being 6'8" 209lbs), he'll get bullied about for awhile on defense.

I think people really need to temper their expectations of what Wemby will actually be able to do in his rookie year. He won't do anything defensively against the likes of Davis, Jokic, Embiid hell, even Horford, Sab and Ayton. Sky's the ceiling for this kid but he has a ways to go to make an impact like Lebron. Heck, I'd be impressed if could replicate Davis' rookie year.

I agree expectations are too high, but if hes dominant from day one, its on defense, offensively hes a project, defensively hes already a superb.

JJ Redick always manages to get the right people on his podcast at the right time.

So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.
