Not top 5. That is some funny ****

Again the mainstream conversation about Jokic to me stresses what I've said for awhile now in that mainstream media doesn't want anymore Tim Duncans in the modern sports climate ever again because it's simply not good for business. Jokic could win multiple rings but again he plays in a small market, doesn't have a highlight producing playstyle, not demonstratively cocky on the court, and oh he's also European and white. To them a white European player can never be the best player in basketball or in the discussion, he just can't lol. Also to them in modern sports you cannot have a best player of a sport has no personality and give them no content to discuss daily. The only reason Duncan was acknowledged is because 5 rings speak for themselves. This is the same mainstream media that at times tries to bring up the fact that Mike Trout never makes the playoffs and didn't want to play for NYY, LAD, BOS so he should be dismissed or not discussed. The concept that not every best player is going to be Brady, Manning, Jordan, Mahomes or Lebron, Steph and Curry is something that they will not accept. I just find it incredibly hilarious that now they all praise Giannis to slight Jokic when they were dismissing him even after he won a ring.

It is more about personality and playing style then it has to do with him being white and European. Look at Luka the mainstream media loves Luka. But I agree with a lot of what you said just not the race part.

The Jokic MVP debate takes an ugly turn in latest Perkins commentary

He’s suggesting that Jokic is on track to win a third-straight MVP award because he’s white.

...

Normally, those debates are fun. Today, it became ugly.

Perkins’ allegation can’t be proven or disproven. The result, however, is that it tarnishes Jokic’s awards, at least in some people’s eyes.

Sad, but we move on.

As I said earlier in the thread, ESPN's opinions and voting for the NBA MVP the last few years have been outliers. And that'll likely be the case this year as well, IMO.

Perkins is an ignorant guy for those comments.

Then again, I assume the RealGMers who put down Jokic’s greatness are doing so for racist reasons too.

I understand it is a tough conversation, but on social media, I absolutely experience it on the daily that black fans do not like Jokic and Doncic and are saying ridiculous things. I mean, it's not hard to see that black fans and players kind of feel that this is their game, and have a tough time to give credit to a white superstar, or see them in an unbiased manner. Obviously, not saying every black fan feels this way, but it is definitely a thing.

Its everyone's game, everybody in the world is playing basketball and if i am correct inventor of the basketball game was the white person . Yes, black players are more successful playing the sport of the basketball throughout the history than any any other race of people but that doesn't mean that black people have exclusive ownership over the sport . Basketball is not the hip hop, rap, soul music, jazz , reggae blues etc. so that you can make that argument.

I mean, Perkins made this a narrative, we might as well talk about it. I know it is a dangerous topic and can turn into a crap show.

That's true, and the most vocal ones are usually not the most restraint people.

And again I don't even think its a black thing but more a bias against specifically European players. Giannis is black but clearly faced a considerable amount of being dismissed by ex-players, talking head media, and also at one point his peers even after the ring. Tony Parker got hate too or heck how many times do guys still rag on Gobert. The only reason it's so noticeable is there are some American players with shortcomings and flaws in their game(Carmelo) that aren't judged the same way by talking head media or ex-players. It's turned into a U.S. vs Europe thing. I'm curious how Wembanyama is treated depending where he's drafted because the other thing that is laughable is you can bet if Giannis, Luka, Jokic, or any of the other great European players played for LAL or the Knicks they would be heralded as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

the only topic for me is that it shouldn't be used to just stir the pot by talking heads on TV, it's irresponsible and offensive.
either there's some meat or you'd better use some restraint.

It's definitely an uncomfortable discussion to be had about race, but it probably should be discussed. Yes, a lot of vitriol Jokic receives comes directly from minorities. If you wander through Twitter, you'll see the same person say "Jokic is overrated because he's the great white hope" while at the same time their next tweet will say something like "The Nuggets have a roster spot for Cancar, but Carmelo still a free agent. Make that make sense."

Note: I PG'd up some of the comments.

The fact that Perkins is saying "He's not top 10 in scoring" tells you all you need to know.

Would you rather have the guy that generates 50 points per game through points/assists, or the guy that scores 30 but generates a total of 40?

People like Perk like to pretend that the only value a player has offensively is when they have the intent to score.

Next year if Jokic decides to chuck 20-22 shots a game, and scores at a 55% clip (he did 21 shots at 58% in the playoffs last year), will Perkins still keep that same narrative?

I disagree 100 percent. The majority of people that are in the media and the majority of discourse on jokic has no racial bias. They are disrespecting the majority of people’s opinions on here.

Perk will say a narrative that will get people’s attention. That dude and espn in particular spread anything to get ratings. They are in a business. Perk is just a businessman.

13, Embiid has been out of the race. even when he "just" missed 10 or 11 it was well known to everyone except maybe the die hard desperate Embiid fans he is gonna be load-managed more

he'll miss his usual 15+, that alone will ensure he will never win an MVP

might be good for him, if he'll take the last couple of games to rest and actually come rested and healthy to the playoffs this season

unlike the last two seasons when he was busy stat-padding (for real) vs tanking teams without a Center a-la Indy last seaon

edit: didn't he get injured last season vs the Raps in such a game?
