If I were the opposing coach, I would love to see Wemby playing outside of 3pt line most of the game - even though he makes 40% of them. That's how you transform a generational talent into rich man's Channing Frye on offense.

Germany's emergence as a powerhouse in the 2020s is really something.

Curious how those who've paid more attention to them would explain the rapid rise without any Dirk-level player.

Solid role-playing bigs. Great shooting from Obst. Franz coming into his own. And Schroeder being surprisingly effective in FIBA play.

It's really a team effort with a 1-2 punch of Franz and Schroeder on offense.

Franz is statistically the same as Dirk at 22 years old. Dirk did play 38 mpg, so he averaged 1-2 more ppg.

FRA is a joke. Should have lost to Japan if not for the crooked refs.

They are the best "team" on both ends of the floor. They know each other (continuity), they enjoy playing with and for each other. And they finally have 5-6 good basketball players, something wasn't the case during Dirk-era. Simple as that...

In 2000s, they were still playing hard, and were a good "team". But they were really lacking a group of good basketball players - Mithat Demirel of all people were their PG for years. Still they had some serious success like getting Silver in 2005 EC, Bronze in 2002 WC.

Maybe it would be a better idea to think about why other teams cannot learn the basics of basketball. There is no secret recipe for Germany.

First of all, no Germany is not emerging as a powerhouse. But i know it was meant as a compliment.

Coaching was a big factor. Herbert gave a target basicly stating we want three medals in the next three competitions, Euro's, World Cup and Olympics. Everyone has to check their own ego for that common goal. Starting with Schröder accepting he might be the best player for germany on one night but can't be forcing his game when he is off. Him accepting he's not going to be the next Dirk, he hoped he could become was essential for the team spirit and goals. Everyone else just simply bought into that vision team > individual. So far 2/3 on the medal prediction with obviously a hugely unexpected gold last year.

Talent of that France frontcourt is wonderful, but never really bought the powerhouse status when that back court is just straight up not good.

That Japan game told me everything about that team

The competition doesn’t seem very good in these Olympics unfortunately. Current odds to win Gold -

USA -600

Canada +800

Germany +1100

Serbia +2000

France +4000

Australia +4500

Greece +20000

South Sudan +40000

Brazil +40000

Puerto Rico +50000

I dunno.. GER has the player that is emerging as a superstar BUT hate/love him, Dennis is the engine for their team. If he drops/retires/injure himself, GER has no up-and-coming guard that can take over.

FRA though has all the untapped potential in the world. Will it blossom? I mean, I was one of those foolish enough to think that Frank NTkili-something was gonna be good.

France would want to hope they’re better. They’re getting booed by the home crowd.

The French people love a good “protest” I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s next.

Hey, our PG was Steffen "the only reason I play over better PG options is that I am tall" Hamann!
