Not surprising. I remember watching this interview his rookie year. Definitely had some speech coaches or something as he progressed in his career. The content is cool though.

The grammar is not a surprise. I saw an interview of MJ when he was going to the North Carolina campus for the first time. He sounded so shy and country that you would never believe that years later he be the example of what you want a athlete to look and sound like.
