Yeah I think that New Orleans Pelicans is fine. It's different, it stands out and the jersey and logo seem to be well done (see above). Yes if you want to get picky the Brown Pelicans (which are the ones that you'd find in the Gulf Coast area) are the smallest of the Pelican family so that may be like the Grizzlies being called the Panda Bears but overall Pelicans are among the largest birds in the US, are powerful flyers, with thick bodies and generally have somewhat of a mean streak if threatened.

Why not Leeches ? You could likely find those in some of the swamps of Louisiana.

New Orleans Rattlers? New Orleans Copperheads? Both Rattle snakes and coperheads (snakes) are found thorughout Lousiana and have that cool deadly type of conotation.
