Once again, not to take anything away from Marc and the Grizzlies but the truth is that they are NOT the game's most effective defense.

They are the game's 2nd most effective defene:

http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/de ... efficiency

Memphis has a great defensive efficiency of 0.969 but Indiana is #1 at 0.962

You've busted that nut already.

And has been pointed out already, Memphis is better if you consider they play in the harder, deeper Western conference.

i'm not sure where the stats are coming from here, but on hoopdata.com the distance between indy and memphis is greater. the data is only updated through the end of march, but i can't imagine memphis came close to closing the gap. and the difference between the conferences is not as profound as you're making it out to be. i think you can add 2-3 wins to a western team

Two things

1. Gratz to Marc. Well deserved.

2. Can we agree now that LeBron is undisputedly the best perimeter defender in the league. The results from the last 2 years have settled this argument.

Did LeBron place second in the tally?

i'm sure tony allen and paul george would get a fair amount of support. but anyway, lebron has been defending on the perimeter less this season

Did my own investigation and he did: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... 9506.story

I think LeBron wins the award eventually, either deservedly or out of a sympathy vote. My anticipation is there will be a year where the voters know LeBron deserves the MVP, but they tire of voting him for it and hand him the DPOY instead.

Indy plays the bobcats 4 times,
Memphis plays SA, OKC, DEN, LAC, HOU, UTA, GSW, etc........ 4 times each.

There are far more crappier teams in the East to feed good defense upon.

The west have 5 56+ win teams this year. The east had 1 and only 1 more even crack 50, even a sub .500 team in te playoffs. The west had several teams with a better record that are lottery bound over .500.

Not only that but The east also is home to the 3 worst teams this year before you get to a the west.

A, while your seven one hundredths of a point is better, it comes against more and weaker competition.

Trade conferences for both teams and it wouldn't be close.
In the west, Indy is a 6th seed.
In the east, Mphs is a 2nd seed.

1) It's entirely true that Memphis could be a top 2 seed in the East. They have a 22 - 8 record against the East which translates to a 73.3% winning percentage. If they were an Eastern team and played 52 games against the East then they would have around 40 wins from playing Eastern teams alone. And since they have a great record against the West as well (34 - 18) I can easily see them being a 60+ win team.

2) However, Indiana has played quite good against the West. They have a 18 - 12 record which translates to a 60% winning percentage. In fact, Indiana played a tad worse against the East (31 - 20 translates to 59.6% while 18 - 12 translates 60% exactly). So, chances are that they would still be a 50 win team or so in the West. Of course, that would put them in a lower seed (since the West is more top-heavy) as you said.

I certainly acknowledge that the West is tougher than the East (although, injuries has made this difference seem bigger than it really is). But Indiana has held the league's best offenses to low scoring games and bad shooting nights.

Here are some examples:

Indiana vs Miami: 87 - 77 -> http://espn.go.com/nba/recap?id=400278232

The Heat shot 41.2%.

Indiana vs New York: 81 - 76 -> http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278247

The game was without Melo but still the Knicks only shot 34.8%.

Indiana vs New York: 125 - 91 -> http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278521

Once again, the Knicks only shot 33.7%.

Houston vs Indiana: 91 - 100 -> http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278784

The Rockets shot 38.6%. It's important to note that Indiana has held Houston below 100 points in both games of the season series.

In general, the Pacers have played amazing D throughout the year with the exception of the month of April, in which they faced some injury issues.

Look, I'll say it once again. I don't want to take anything away from the Grizzlies. They are an amazing defensive team and Marc is a good pick for DPOY.

But I don't think that just because the Western Conference has tougher competition that a Western team should be considered the best at any given subject especially when the statistics say otherwise.

Tony Allen has to actually get decent minutes though. Can't really make a case for a guy if he is barely on the court.
Paul George is good but you wonder how much is being part of the Indiana defense.

Wow, this came completely out of left field... I think it might be the most shocking selection in the history of this award that is already having a very shaky status. I mean Marc Gasol might be a solid defender but he is nowhere near the best defensive player in the NBA. And the historical comparison just gets laughable: Tim Duncan that many people put among the best defensive players in NBA history has never won this award and this guy who never was considered a great defender now has one. I can't speak for others but I will never take this award under consideration when I compare players in the future.

BTW, my more deserving picks for this year include Noah, Hibbert, Duncan, LeBron James and probably several others. I don't think Marc Gasol's name even pops up.

I think just the fact that LeBron is asked on a nightly basis to guard 1-5 and then in crunch time is put on the best player and does a great job of locking them down, would make him the DPOY. Gasol cant go and guard people who arent at the 4 or 5 like LeBron, Gasol also doesnt have the ability to completely shut down a team on the fast break because they hear his foot steps coming. I think people just take LeBrons defense for granted, thus they look to another player for this award.

I find it extremely surprising that he was so low on the list. Marc was surely the best pick among the players that got the most votes.

I love LeBron, he can affect the game on defense more than any other player and I wouldn't be surprised if eventually he wins DPOY. That said, he did coast for 60-70% of last season. It's hard to give a player DPOY when he takes most of the regular season off.

Royce Young ‏@dailythunder 12m
Synergy certainly isn't the end-all for evaluation, but in 550 plays, Marc Gasol allowed 39.0% shooting. In 551, Kendrick Perkins 34.6%

Royce Young ‏@dailythunder 9m
In isolation, pick-and-roll and spot-up situations, Perk held opponents to a lower FG% than Gasol. Only thing Gasol did better was post-up.

Clearly the wrong guy won the award. KENDRICKPERKINSFORDPOY
**** Ron Artest
**** Marco Belinelli

People do take LeBron's defense for granted, but frankly it's just really tough for a guard or wing to win this award. Deserved or not, voters keep on voting for big men.

In the past 25 years, post defenders have won it 23 times, with the lone outliers being Artest and Payton with one award each.

Hello Brooklyn wrote:Tim Duncan deserves it, and the fact that he never got one is a shame.

Most underrated player in NBA history.

Most refer to him as the best PF to ever play.. Underrated? I agree he should have won 1 in his career but Marc, Hibbert, & Lebron all could make a case over him this year. Maybe he gets the lifetime achievement DPOY when he announced his last season.

Marc Gasol now has one more DPOY than Tim Duncan. That's just horribly horribly wrong.
