Because Curry's a lot better as a catch and shoot player who is much better at playing off ball than Kyrie. Kyrie is a PG with a pretty good outside shot. Basically Curry can play the role of a SG while Kyrie is most effective with the ball.

A hard close zone defense and Wall will be in serious troubles. He is less Fiba´s player than Kyrie.

1. CP3
2. Steph Curry
3. Westbrook
4. Wall
5. Parker
6. Dragic
7. Lillard
8. Lawson
9. Lowry
10. Rondo

is my top 10. I would put Kyrie right on the outside of that, probably. MAYBE id put him higher then Rondo but I just think Irving is over hyped right now, he could put it together eventually but right now I just dont see him as a better player than any of those guys.
Go Knicks!

Rose would be in trouble too then. He's not a good shooter either, and actually a worse 3pt shooter. Wall last year shot 35% from 3pt, that's better than Rose ever has.

Let's face it, none of these guys are going to be "in trouble" with the amount of talent they'll be surrounded with.

Why are they calling Kyrie a pure pg?

Probably because he's not good at playing off the ball.

Because Kyrie is one of the most underrated passers in the league.

Yeah that's not true. Kyrie can be very effective off the ball. But like most good players he's better with ball in hand. But we played some of out best ball last season with dion at point and Kyrie playing off him

I really want Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to step aside from this and focus on resting their bodies for the upcoming season.

Also people act like wall is twenty times better than Kyrie. It's a marginal gap. Kyries first two seasons in the nba were better than walls and Kyrie will be better than wall this year ( but that's just a prediction). He did have a poor season last season but he will bounce back.

Call me crazy but I'd rather have both Wall and Kyrie over Rose. Mainly because I dont know how long Rose's knees will hold up.

He still hasn't been called a pure pg until now

Kyrie is a better shooter than the majority of shooting guards in the NBA though. And someone like Dwyane Wade is most effective with the ball, but is a shooting guard anyway.

Anyone who can shoot and handle can theoretically be either guard position. Your size is what really holes you into point guard, with not being able to guard the 2 spot.

I don't think Rose's game is suited for international play.

They're in their early 20's and stopped playing in April. They've had 3 months to hang, and there's NBA players who have cited international competition with team USA as beneficial to their NBA game.

I hear what you're saying, and rest is always positive, but there's a better chance this won't affect their conditioning at all (and probably improve it) in addition to building their games and confidence.

They are taking returning veterans regardless of whether current Rose is better than the other point guards.

Westbrook was surprisingly very capable of penetrating against the zone in international basketball... I'm curious to see if Wall can as well.

Neither brings a lot of value on the defensive end, each can create their own offense off the bounce. I do think Lillard is a more explosive athlete (above the rim especially) and that Kyrie is a better creator off the bounce, but a lot of similarities. Kyrie is two years younger though.

Two key distinctions to me are that (a) Lillard is a very poor finisher at the rim, while Kyrie is at least league average - which is significantly better than Lillard and (b) Lillard is FAR better as a catch and shoot player. To me that's what has allowed Lillard to be labeled as not merely a pure point guard. Lillard shot 42.6% on catch and shoot jumpers - with 89% of those shots being triples. A very good 61.4 efg%. Kyrie? A terrible 35.6% on catch and shoot jumpers, and an even worse 32.1% on catch and shoot threes.

Lillard is not 'very poor' at finishing around the rim, give me a break. He struggled at the beginning of last season but overall in his short career he's been easily above average in that department

I'll also trust what team USA coaches have to say over armchair GM's here.

Lillard shot 40.4% on drives (well-below average) while Kyrie shot 46.3% on drives. Inside 7.5 feet Lillard shot 46.86%, with league average at 56%. Kyrie shot 54.9% inside 7.5 feet.

I'm not saying Lillard shouldn't make the team - simply point out something he needs to improve on. Just as Kyrie isn't nearly the off the ball player and spot up shooter Lillard is, Lillard isn't nearly the finisher around the rim that Kyrie is.
