Agree

Dude is a massive liability. Utah went from bad to awesome changing Kanter with Gobert.

Kanter is nothing special seriously. OKC will be paying the MAX to a homeless Al Jefferson

Gobert is a future DPOY. All Kanter has to do is get to about a D+ defensively, with Ibaka next to him.

He's not. But some dumb owner will see the numbers and pressure the GM to get him, even though he's without a doubt the worst big man defender in the NBA, by a long shot.

What talent are they going to shed? Steve Novak and Perry Jones? gtfo

If the Thunder didn't match, they would be being cheap. I don't think the players they'll lose are a big deal, it's just that sending players away for financial reasons is going to be tough to sell Durant on.

Honestly, I think Durant was put on the path out the door by the Harden trade, and it would take an impact player acquisition to change his mind. This is just Portland trying to push OKC a bit, make it harder for them to make the play that keeps him in town.

I agree about Gobert, but not even Ibaka can hide Kanter's flaws. Look at the defensive numbers of OKC's front-court when Kanter and Ibaka are paired. They're terrible.

Kanter isn't great, but he's great for OKC based on their team construct. Some people don't understand that apparently. Still, this is huge money and he probably isnt even worth it to OKC.

Of course you match. You can always trade him later. There's no profit in getting your pocket picked.

As a Jazz fan, this is a win-win. Kanter is going to handicap one of our division rivals!

15% trade kicker would make it slightly harder. Not a whole lot, but this was all a very deliberately structured from Portland to make OKC think twice.

It is, but GMs get paid to work. If it was easy, the owner's idiot nephew could do it for 1/2 the salary.

The only way Kanter can be effective is as a 4 alongside a tall and defensive specialist Center. I actually liked the few games Kanter started at the 4 next to Gobert. If Kanter plays at the 5, I don't think there's any PF that can mask his defensive shortcomings. Not even Ibaka

I actually don't mind this for Portland. I doubt they are competing now or next year. The team needed scorers period, IF Kanter can improve his defense, he is rather young afterall, this could be a big get for Portland in the future. Not sure if I would match as the Thunder, I said before I wouldn't but now you have to really look at your options. I would be hesitant to let him go but not super willing to retain him either at this point. Touch choice.

Because there is a repeater tax and OKC didn't want to get into it before Durant/Westbrook sign extensions

But why are they cheap in general, not just in this case. I'm curious too because OKC is a basketball town and they have two superstars.

And I don't get this for Portland at all. You need to embrace the tank and let Plumlee/Leonard/Vonleh develop...

They're not cheap, they have one of the highest payrolls in the league, they're always over the cap and were over the tax last year. This narrative really has to stop sometime.

Nolan wrote:I don't hate Kanter as much as most people around here do but why is Portland interested in him? Their front court is already pretty crowded.

Well their front court has bodies, no production right now.

Leonard: Extremely promising. Amazing shot. More of a natural PF by style, center by size. Very athletic, but still raw and learning the art of "big man"
Vonleh: 19...raw...some health concerns
Kaman: Relic of the Aldridge days. They kept him around before knowing what LMA was going to be doing, decent vet to teach guys a few things.
Davis: Nice player, probably always a complimentary guy and never one to be showcased though.
Plumlee: Ok at PnR defense, not that ok at defense overall, at times. Terrible FT shooter.

Freeland as others mentioned is long gone.

So really, they have the players just not...real defined or developed guys. Kanter I'm not sure fixes that, but worst case is Portland gets stuck with a young big that can at least score the ball. Their window is bolted shut right now, no harm in gambling.

This is a no brainer move by the Blazer, unlike most around here hating on Kanter he's still really young with a ton of upside.Upside being a 20-10 guy and all-star and someone that can play PF or C spots.Yes his defense isn't great but can improve in the right system with the right coach and always can add a PF or C thats defensive minded to play along side him.Starting the rebuild in Portland around Lillard/Kanter would be a very smart move and give the fans evening in a tanking season something to look forward to.You have those two,a high draft pick in '16 and cap to rebuild the team fast.

If I am the Thunder I don't know if I match,he would average what $17M or 18M per year and you still have to resign Durant,Westbrook,Ibaka,Adams...ect but if Durant and or Westbrook walk in the offseason next year having a resigned Kanter could less the blow a little bit and then at least you still have a young potential all-star on the roster.Kanter and Westbrook for the last third of the season nearly carried the Thunder a team crippled with injuries to the playoffs.Again tough choice to make if your the Thunder but again I would probably let him go and hope that Durant/Westbrook don't do the same in '16.

It doesn't handicap them at all with the new salary cap.

This really doesnt help the blazers much but his price might be pretty cheap with the new cap

The last two max players the Jazz let walk were Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Let that sink in a moment.

Maybe Kanter is worth it under the new cap though. Will see. I really like his offensive rebounding.
