People should be mad at DeAndre Jordan, not the Clippers. Seriously, can you blame the Clippers for wanting to keep their center? This is 100% on Jordan. He was the free agent. He's the one who made the decision to go to the Mavs and then back out.

I dont understand how you think re-signing DJ to a 4 year contract means you're treadmilling...
You are aware that since you guys are over the cap you wouldnt have been able to replace DJ with anything more than just a minimum contract right?
And the only free agent of note in next years FA class that is better than DJ is Durant and he's not coming to the Clippers

The problem is focusing on the idea of the max without thinking of the big picture. Can't be stuck on the conclusion that DJ is "not worth the max", and that's that. The reality is that the max label isn't the most important part. The important part in the end is what percentage of the cap a contract is taking and DJ's max contract amount in 2016-2017 becomes the equivalent of a $15-16 million contract in 2015-2016 and like Blake and Paul's contracts, none of them are maximum amounts relative to the new salary cap.
Clippers will have the ability if they want to create room for one of those SF's available in the market, or at least be a player in sign and trade for one of them. In addition, they can be able to send out a player and take on more contract on a player they like in order to help another team clear space to go after a guy like Durant. So the team isn't stuck and unable to improve because of the addition of DJ. If they get stuck and unable to improve it will be because the FO office somehow manages to find a way to screw things up. If they do that, then I'm not sure why there would be a different expectation if they had no DJ and cap space. Cap space doesn't guarantee anything, still requires doing the work.
Then again, Martin always complains about how Chris Paul's max contract on a Clipper team that was over the cap somehow handicapped the team and prevented them from being able to sign some theoretical other star players / high level wings. Somehow he thinks Chris Paul taking a pay cut would have accomplished something for the Clippers ability to sign players when over the cap teams just have MLE, BAE and minimum contracts at their disposal.

Doc's probably right. Nothing brings people together than a shared dramatic experience. As for Blake posting funny pics about the situation.. so what? He does that. He's a funny guy IMO. I don't get why the Clippers should feel ashamed that DJ changed his mind and wanted to play with them.
DJ is the one who deserves scrutiny. He botched the Mavs' plans entirely, made promises he didn't keep, and really dragged this thing out. He really screwed a franchise that was trying to make him a star, and didnt even have the manhood to let the owner know about it.

The thing is, he is right. It WAS a great team-building moment. Imagine if you had a good job paying great money, but you got an offer from a company that you thought had something better to offer. You agree to go to that company, but after a while you start to have second thoughts.
Then all your coworkers and bosses fly across the country to your house to tell you they want you back. It's basically the perfect storm and it makes me love the Clippers.
Could DeAndre have handled it better? Yes. But the way the Clips handled it is the definition of TEAM. I don't know what more you could want from a professional sports franchise. I am a hardcore Jazz fan, but ... GO CLIPS (against everyone but the Jazz). Love it.
ETA as I read through this: some of the people on this thread are downright insane! Acting like DeAndre murdered the Pope ... Good God, I don't love it, but seriously it isn't that big of a deal when people get cold feet on a job offer. Quit treating these guys like they belong to you.

By that logic, you can't blame Jordan either... Can you blame him for wanting the most money available?

If he was only doing it for money, he wouldn't even bothered with the Mavs.

This board will explode with glee in about 11 months when the Clippers face another second round exit.
I already cannot wait.

Re: Doc: 'great teambuilding moment. fantastic. absolutely wonderful; DJ will be better at this when hes a FA again in 3
Doc is completely overrated and I say that as a Boston fan. He was carried in the x's and o's department of coaching by Thibodeau during the championship season in 2008 and he had Danny Ainge overseeing the GM duties. Even with that the Celtics still went to 7 games against a Hawks team that wasn't very good and 7 games against a Cavs team that had Lebron and nothing else. Doc is a good ego manager and plays the media well but he's not a very good coach and he's an even worse GM. It's not a surprise that he's the only coach to ever blow two series when leading 3-1, he blew multiple 3-2 leads while he was in Boston.
With that said, the media isn't going to attack Doc because he's got them in his back pocket. No matter what he said about this situation, the media will NEVER blast Doc. They never did when he was in Boston and they really never have because they like the guy, he gives them great quotes and never turns down an interview.
As for this moment in particular, Deandre has the right to change his mind, as shady as that may seem. The part that made it go from simply a low class move by Deandre to an embarrassment was that the Clippers sent a group of people to barricade the house and not let Cuban or anyone on the Mavs talk to Deandre before he signed the contract at midnight. It made Deandre look like a child who couldn't be trusted and it made the Clippers look bad because they seemed to be encouraging the classless behavior of not letting the Mavs know that Deandre had changed his mind.

I don't understand how anyone could think taking $20M out of the market like this wouldn't affect players. But please just write it off as sour grapes despite my posts being all over multiple forums being very reasonable about this subject.
What's your point about money in the market? Now there is one less FA in the market and therefore more money elsewhere. Because DJ stayed with his home team there is more spending on players in total and rival FAs have more potential money.
That $20M was not available because Dallas had committed it to Jordan a WEEK ago. Obviously other free agents had to pounce on the offers available in the meantime. They couldn't wait thinking maybe Dallas will get that money and give it to me.
It had an impact.
Agreed 100%. People are gonna assume your salty but so far, all your posts I've read on this matter have been mostly all unbiased.

Why is this such a bad thing? DJ did the right thing - joining the Mavs would have been stupid. DJ and CP3 are amazing together and he made the best decision for him over the long-run. Thank goodness the clippers fought for him or they would have been screwed next year. At least they now have the big three plus pierce to contend in a horribly tough division.

Some people are taking this too serious. But did this guy say it's the agent's responsibility to call? You know better Doc especially when reports say his agent couldn't get in contact with him.

But anyway, and I've said this before. They stole back thier own player and I think with the additions they made it'll all prove worth it. I can't get why everybody is acting so pissed about it unless you're the Mavs.
